Here is the new coupon policy for Zellers. It seems they are following Walmart’s lead and allowing overage. Yay!
Guiding Principles
Each time a coupon is presented for redemption, the Zellers Cashier will be required to read the Terms & Conditions (T&Cs) on each individual coupon. This must be done to validate acceptance/ redemption criteria, and when applicable, the cashier will follow the acceptance rules established by Zellers (see below). As a retailer, we agree to comply with the T&Cs stated on the coupons. The below ‘Zellers Acceptance/Redemption Rules’ are expected to clarify what we will allow, and what we will NOT allow (related to couponing at Zellers).
Zellers Acceptance/Redemption Rules
Provided that the coupon presented is still valid (has not expired),
A. We will allow customers to:
1.Redeem 1 coupon per item in a sales transaction (ratio 1:1 for each qualifying item) i.e. if you purchase 6 cans of tuna, you are entitled to redeem up to 6 coupons. Only one coupon per item is allowed.
2.Redeem a coupon that exceeds the current selling value (regular, sale, clearance or blue ticket price) of the item; provided that all coupons combined do not exceed the value of all items being purchased in the sales transaction. Note: if only 1 item is being purchased, and the value of the coupon exceeds the selling value of the item, the value of the coupon will be reduced to match the price of the item (before taxes). Per B2 below, cash back is not allowed.
3.Redeem coupons for ‘free’ items (which will be exempt from taxes).
4.Redeem coupons towards items that they hold a valid Raincheck for.
5.Redeem internet coupons (obtained and printed from reputable internet sites) for a $ value off ONLY (internet coupons for free items will NOT be accepted).
6.Redeem hydro coupons (only if Zellers is listed as a participating retailer i.e. on the vendor site).
7.Redeem a coupon towards an item in a sale which is being further discounted (at transaction level) on senior’s day, customer appreciation days, for credit discount offers or when using a SPC Card (Student Purchase Card).
8.Redeem coupons that provide a Canadian mailing address (for reimbursement) in the T&Cs.
9.Redeem Social Media Coupons (obtained and printed from a reputable social media site such as facebook.com/zellerscanada).
10.1Redeem coupons towards items that have been ‘price matched’ (per the guidelines of our price match guarantee noted in our weekly circulars).B. We will NOT allow:
1.Coupon stacking (use multiple coupons towards the purchase of a single item in a sales transaction).
2.Cash back (if the coupon amount exceeds the current selling value of the item).
3.Redemption of expired coupons.
4.Facsimiles (photocopies) or reproductions of any coupons.
5.Redemption of coupons valid in the US only or any other countries.
6.Redemption of coupons towards products that are not explicitly illustrated or described on the actual coupon.
7.Redemption of coupons presented to the cashier on a portable handheld device (i.e. smart phone, iPad etc) unless the offer is explicitly communicated as such to support a Zellers offer on facebook.com/zellerscanada.
8.Redemption of mail-in rebate coupons.
9.Redemption of coupons if the T&C states ‘do not accept without a dot-scan barcode below the expiry date’ and the coupon presented does not display the barcode in the noted spot.

I was told recently that Zellers DO NOT allow the use of coupons on a Price Matched item. When I asked to speak to a Manager or Supervisor there were NONE to be found…….the cashier informed me it was written on the sheet she had taped to her cashiers desk but would not allow me to see it….BOY was i mad. She proceeded to put the items through and i had to say to her…no thankyou, i want to use my coupons, GUESS I’LL GO TO WALMART. Walmart, although the odd cashier is a pain, have great policies and i’ve never had any trouble doing everything there!
I absolutely HATE Zellers for shopping now! I will only go there if I can get something for practically nothing!
I had a bad experience at Zellers (I’ve been trying to use up my 12/31 expiries lol!). I had 4 Alberto coupons and they had a sale this week. The cashier told me that I could only use one! I tried to argue with her but I could tell I was getting nowhere. The store was about to close and there were people behind me (though they were nice) so I decided to just to give up as I was tired and didn’t have it in me that night. Plus, I was not familiar with Zellers coupon policy so I thought maybe she is right. I see by the above that I certainly could have used my four coupons.. Cassie you are so right to say have the policies with you when you shop. I have decided never to shop at Zellers again. Living in Toronto I have plenty of other options than Zellers (this was the store at The Woodbine Centre BTW)
@Diane..Bravo to you just because someone doesn’t care to read the policies and if they can’t understand them, doesn’t make them invalid or stupid or wrong. I don’t like the policy either about not taking coupons on a price match, but I am not going to bitch and complain about it.
A note to everyone…Target is NOT taking over Zellers. They have purchased the store leases, something totally different.
Just thought I would let you know that Zellers recently updated their coupon policy, so this one is out of date (my friend works there and coupons so she let me know).
They will now either price match OR allow a coupon, no both on the same item. There are also some higher value items such as electronics that they will NOT price match (flyers have more specific details printed really small).
The other way there policy has changed is that they are NOW ALLOWED to accept a coupon that exceeds the value of the item, they just adjust the value of the coupon (example, Colgate on sale for $2.99 and coupon is for $3.00, the coupon will now be entered as $2.99, which they were not allowed to do before; previously they were not allowed to accept it if the coupon exceeded the value of the item).
These policy changes happened within the last month or so (September 2011 sometime).
Hope this helps!!
the only thing Zellers has ever been good for is a nice selection of Bernat cotton yarns.
for anything else, i go elsewhere. They aren’t worth the hassle and for most things they are overpriced.
Since no one ever reads the find print in the Zellers flyer, which maybe you should instead of bitching and complaining. Here is what the fine print reads:
GENERAL: We reserve the right to limit quantities. All references to price are to Zellers’ prices only. “Save” means in comparison to our regular price, which may be higher in some areas; but the lowest such price is used as the reference when we say “Save”. “Price cut” means there is a new, lower everyday low price, or the existing everyday low price is being lowered temporarily. Where applicable, a deposit and/or environmental levy may be added to the price of an item. † Registered trademark of Hudson’s Bay Company.® Registered trademark of MasterCard International Incorporated. Rain checks are not issued for Fashion, Seasonal, Clearance, Bonus Offers, Special Buys, Limited Time Offers or Online Offers, as indicated in the flyer or on in store signing.
SELECTION MAY VARY BY STORE: Assortment, Brands, Colours and Styles may not be available in all stores, or may vary from store to store. PRICE MATCH GUARANTEE: Price Match available with proof of current local advertised retail price for in stock identical items. Before you continue bitching and complaining maybe you should look in the Zellers flyer where there’s the fine print. That’s the problem with people NO ONE reads the find print instead you whine & bitch.
I was very annoyed to learn of Zellers change in coupon policy last Sunday. I spent 45 minutes shopping for the items I wanted to price match (deoderant from Walmart and Glade products from Giant Tiger) as well as the other items I needed. When I approached the cash I was friendly and explained that I wanted to price match and I had a couple of coupons. She told me policy had changed and I could do one or the other. QUOTE “We can’t do both anymore we are just giving the stuff away and we are losing too much money”.
I was so annoyed I came home and sent an e-mail to the corporate inquiries address. I expressed my displeasure and pointed out the difference between a price match (which is something that Zellers is offering to make sure customers are not shopping elsewhere because of price) and a manufacturer’s coupon (which is 100% reimbursed by the manufacturer and costs Zellers nothing).
I suggested to Zellers if they could no longer afford to PRICE MATCH then stop offering that to customers. I also pointed out that coupons cost Zellers nothing.
Anyways, long story short. Several e-mails were exchanged that didn’t really conclude anything. I have been a faithful Zellers shopper my entire life. No longer.
I see now that their “policy” (if you can call it that) says that the value of the coupon must not exceed the current retail price of the item being purchased. But I have used the $3 off Purex coupon when it was on sale for $2.99 with no problems. I have used coupons on other sale items that were one penny more then the cost and never had an issue. I went there today and they refused to let me use my $2.00 off coupon on something for $1.99. I asked to see a copy of their store coupon policy and was told they don’t have a hard copy, they can only tell me what head office has told them over the phone. WTH?? You get coupon policy changes over the phone?? How does that work? But I see now that they were right. But what really urked me was that the store itself does not have a hard copy of their coupon policy to show their customers when something like this happens 9_9
There are new rules at Zellers, you can no longer price match and use coupons at the same time. It is one or the other, so be aware if you are wanting to save big. It is better off going to the exact store now.
I went to local Zellers last night to price match on the Vim on sale at Rexall this week, and the first cashier said ok, then she called someone over to help her, the second girl says its a new policy you can only price match 2 items ( ie 2 bottles of Vim)- then another manager came over and said it was 6, but gave me 10 of each kind. After that I went to a different Zeller in the same city, and their policy at that branch is 4 of one item. What the heck? its the same company, same store policies, yet the managers get to do what they want, guess it depends on their mood. I hate Zellers, I only go there once in a blue moon to get sale items. I do all or most of my shopping at Walmart, they have one of the best policies out there for us coupon queens.
I went to Zellers today to buy Le Coupe hairspray using my $2 off coupon. The hairspray is $1.99. I have used this coupon there no problems a couple of weeks ago. Today when I went the cashiers were giving me a very hard time and said they dont accept printed coupons and the coupon cannot exceed the price of the item (even though it was only a penny)I asked them to call a manager and the manager verified that they dont accept printed coupons and that she had never seen a printed coupon before used there. I will never try to use coupons at Zellers again.
Went to Zellers today to get aspirin they gave me a hard time ended up getting them but would never go back as they don`t give you the full value of the coupon. Went to Walmart first but they were all out of what I was looking for. When I went to Walmart last week the cashier told me that they have to give you full value of the coupon and if after all you items are entered you have a credit you can get it back in cash. I haven`t tried this yet but will try next time I go
thank you for the coupon policies. zellers has always given people problem in the past . this is not something knew the coupons is just one of many problems at zellers stores.I have not even gone to zellers in the last 10 years because every time i went there to buy something that was suppose to be on sell they would say that it was not on sell . i got fed up with them so stopped shopping there for a very long time. went there for the first time in a long time and had to get the girl that was working there to scan the stuff that i picked up to make sure it was going to come up at the right price and it did .maybe the store will inprove.
Thanks for the heads up, Louise. I didn’t know that Zellers sold those!
I forgot to say it was the Zellers in Fredericton NB
I went there yesterday with an internet printed Dizolve coupon and a coupon I got from a free sample of Purex. They took both of them with a smile and told me I got a good deal. Of course it could’ve been the cashier but I’ll be looking for her next time! It can be extremely frustrating to use coupons but we must keep our chins up
Thanks for the heads up, Jennifer! I find it very difficult using printable coupons at Zellers lately.
I went to the Zellers at metrotown in burnaby,bc today. Do not go there if you have Internet printed coupons. They would not accept my Pepcid Ac $2 or my listerine zero $3. They said that they no longer accept Internet printed coupons. I asked for the store managers name so I can follow up on their store policies .
RT – Now that is the most bizarre reason for not accepting a coupont hat I’ve ever heard! It’s even worse than the “you have to buy the ANY product to use this coupon” line that I have received! I hope something is done about your terrible experience!
After my experience at Zellers today, I’m NEVER stepping foot there even if they are giving away their stuff for free!!!
I had 9 travel size Gillette Shave Gel that I wanted to use the $5.00 WUB3 coupons for. I was also buying other things. I get to the cash and I give the cashier all my coupons before she starts scanning my stuff. She just tossed them aside and scanned all of my items. Then she looked at my coupons and said that since they are in English they are not acceptable in Quebec??!! Before I had a chance to say anything the manager comes over and completely agrees with the cashier!! I explained (as calmly as I could) that the coupons say they are redeemable in Canada and that we are in Canada. I offered to translate the coupons for them and they refused. The manager then said that I could not use coupons on travel size items. I told her that the coupons did not specify any minimum size. At this point I got the feeling that both the cashier and the manager did not understand a word of English. They both refused to honor any of my coupons because they were in English!!!!
I left all my items and left. I took their names but I don’t think anything will be done.
I can’t wait till Target takes over!
dani_shay – Omg, sounds like that cashier had something stuck up her rump! So rude!
Naomi – I don’t like this policy either. The store does get the full value of coupons back, so they should be accepting them at full value. If this is the way they are handling coupons, they are going to lose alot of customers.
teachermum – Isn’t it awful how up and down things are? I really hate that!
Ashley – We have recently found a really nice cashier at Zellers and she always seems to be working when we are there, so we have had no problems lately. She said she thinks using coupons is awesome! I love it when cashiers get excited for you! It definetely does depend on the cashier that you get (and the mood that they’re in), unfortunetely.
cabshiraz – I also don’t understand why most retailers refuse to give the full coupon value. As far as I know, only Walmart and Giant Tiger give full value.
Heh, I wonder if it would be worth replying to their reply with a link to here and to SC with attachments of their competitors more liberal coupon policies and telling them to get with it!
I rarely shop at Zellers and with this new coupon rule, I probably ever won’t. I can never find a salesperson to assist me. And when I eventually find someone, they are always so rude and grumpy, I wonder why I bothered. My dad walked out of the store for the same reason. And I was told by a couple of cashiers earlier this year that they do not price match, so I never tried.
And I really don’t understand why retailers don’t give out full price for the coupon if they get back all of their money… it doesn’t make sense to me. Isn’t WalMart the only one to do this?
Wow their policy sucks! I don’t usually have issues with using coupons at Zellers. I almost always go to the same location and my fave cashier is there quite often, and she uses coupons too, so she knows what she’s doing and doesn’t give me a hard time. I have heard sooo many other people say they have had issues at Zellers, and I think it really depends on the store and the cashier.
My biggest problem is training perhaps? For quite some time I never had an issue with any coupon, price matching, SPC etc. Then a month or two ago, after ringing in an order of mostly pricematched items she told me I couldn’t use the coupon because it would be free and was already pricematched. HUH? I told her I did it ALL the time, she told me the manager had told her of changes within the past two weeks, I had her void the entire order and left. I checked with customer service and it was news to the girl on duty that day…then there was a shoplifting episode and a man with low blood sugar…so I didn’t pursue it further-the manager was running out to the parking lot~!
Then I go back a week or so later and got my favourite little cashier and had no issues doing exactly as I always have–in fact, she starts talking to me before I even get to unloading while she is dealing with the customer in front of me…you have pricematches, right? and coupons…and you always bring your own bags…Geesh, I doubt I’m in there once a month!
Last week I got the first girl again but she remembered me (she really did feel bad about my cancelling my order) and said she checked something or other and put everything through-price matches, coupons, SPC…there were no overages that time, but I did have 4 nivea somethings for $2 and $2 coupons…this was as my little cashier (I swear she is about 4’8″!) walked by on her way to somewhere else and said a friendly hello to me as if we were great friends!
I can hardly wait to see what happens next time…..
Susan
I don’t like their coupon policy. “If a coupon value is higher than the cost of an item, then you may not be able to use that coupon to purchase that particular item.” They are getting the money back, why do they care? I’m still gonna try to do it, I did it before and sometimes worked. You just have to remember the people that did it! That’s what I do!
I’ve had the most horrible time using coupons at Zellers- one location in particular. If I can use my coupons somewhere else, I do. Otherwise, I’m sweating as I go through the checkout lol. This one cashier was a pain in the a$$.. I was trying to use just one of those P&G coupons for women’s Gillette toiletry items (save $7-i think, WUB 3) SInce I was buying 3 of the least expensive displayed options on the coupon she complained to her supervisor that I shouldn’t be allowed to use it. Of course, she was told to accept it and my 3 deodorant were free
I also had a full price coupon (no $ limit on it) from Kelloggs and she was complaining that I shouldn’t be able to use because I was using it for a ‘Jumbo’ box of Vector Cereal. Zellers really is the worst for coupons
