Why I Shop at Shoppers Drug Mart.

Why Shop at Shoppers Drug Mart

Shoppers Drug Mart has not always been my favourite store to shop at. I used to think it was expensive, and in all honesty, I thought that all they carried was healthcare items and makeup. I avoided that store like the plague for years, until one day, I needed to buy a special healthcare item and my doctor recommended I buy it at Shoppers Drug Mart. So, in I went.

I browsed through the store for awhile, checking out all they had to offer, and realized that they carried much more than pain relievers and mascara. They had baby items, household cleaners and they actually sold food, too!

Shoppers Drug Mart is now one of my favourite stores to shop at. Here’s why:

    Rewards program

Of course, the best part about this store (and really, one of main reasons I shop there), is the Shoppers Optimum program. I truly believe that it is the best rewards program in Canada.

I regularly earn thousands of points on my purchases and redeem them multiple times per year. It’s not uncommon that I earn at least $1,000 worth of groceries from Shoppers Drug Mart in a year.

For tips on earning points fast, be sure to read my free eBook, The Ultimate Guide to Shoppers Optimum Rewards.

    Coupon Friendly

Thankfully, most of the Shoppers Drug Mart stores that I have shopped at, have been very good with accepting my coupons. I don’t usually run into any issues when trying to use them – even when I use coupons printed from online.

Maybe I have just had good luck with my cashiers, but so far – I can’t complain about their service when it comes to accepting coupon in their stores. They also have coupon tear pads up in their stores all the time, so I find a lot of my coupons there.

One thing I do suggest is, if possible, find a cashier you like and then only shop when you know they will be working. This avoids that nervous feeling that you may get (or is it just me?) when you are checking out with someone new.

    Good sale prices

You can often find good sale prices on the front (and sometimes back) of the Shoppers Drug Mart flyer. The best sales are usually Sunday & Monday only sale prices (about 10-12 items), and these are almost always limited to 4 per customer.

I have seen some fantastic prices for diapers, crackers, peanut butter, snack foods, baby wipes, and so many other items. These are some of the best deals you will find at their stores.

    Manager’s stickers

Shoppers Drug Mart frequently marks down soon-to-expire items with red and white manager’s stickers. These are usually found on food and beverages, but I have also seen them on medicines, pain relievers, vitamins and even beauty goods.

You can combine coupons with these managers stickers, too, so always be on the lookout for them. They save me a ton of money!

    Great clearance sections

I’ve only been to one Shoppers Drug Mart store that didn’t have a great clearance section. All of the others were fantastic. You can almost always find popular brand name items marked down very low, and get those items for a fraction of the original selling price (especially if you use coupons on top of the clearance pricing).

Some of the best deals I’ve found in their clearance sections was $0.50 Sunsilk shampoo, $5 Pampers diapers and $0.25 Crayola pencil crayons. I’ve also seen great prices for Dove soap, Heinz baby food, Christie cookies & crackers, Oasis juice, and much, much more.

Shoppers Drug Mart is not just a “once-in-awhile” store for me.. I try to visit at least once per week, if only just to look for coupons. I almost always find some kind of deal while I am in there.

So if you think Shoppers Drug Mart is too expensive, doesn’t sell what you need, or won’t accept your coupons, please consider giving them a shot. I have found some of my best bargains at their stores and because of their rewards program, I have earned so many free groceries for my family.

Do you shop at Shoppers Drug Mart? Why or why not?

5 Reasons That I Shop at Shoppers Drug Mart

I personally believe that they are not trained on purpose. How many people will wait 20 minutes while they argue about it? JMHO

Love to shop at SDM as well, the managers discounts are wonderful , I have 2 teenage boys, and food it one item that has to be in the house, thanks to SDM I always have cookies, chocolate and gum and I never pay more then 99 cents on each item that would would be $4.99.

This has always been my favorite store but lately I have been finding that the customer service isn’t as good as it once was some of the staff at certain locations are down right rude but I just chance locations and its seems to be ok, but with all the other places to shop and with price matching they might want to try and improve their customer service to keep up.

    4. Catherine says:

Yes Shoppers is too expensive if you pay full price for items so I pretty much only shop sale items. I am also happy to support a company other than Wal-Mart because I hate what Wal-Mart’s business practices.
I have had MANY problems using coupons with inexperienced cashiers. How can you use the same cashier when the people that work there are usually young, working shift work, and probably won’t be working there for long? I walk up to each cash nervously, knowing I will likely have a problem and have to convince multiple cashiers of THEIR OWN coupon policies, and knowing I will likely hold up a huge line behind me even though I also only shop there very late as to avoid this problem. I don’t let this stop me from getting a good deal because at the end of the day I am saving money and who cares about them.
My advice to everyone is to be prepared and to know your stuff! Write down all sale/clearance prices of the items you are buying in case the wrong price comes up at register, and definitely know their coupon policy. Most of them don’t know that the register’s are smarter than they are, and will not accept an improper coupon for whatever reason.
One time I went in for 20x the points event but it was a private even only for optimum users and therefore I had to use a coupon so the cashiers didn’t even know the event was on. I tried to also use my VIB coupon for 8000 bonus points WUS $40+ on baby items and they wouldn’t accept it because they said I couldn’t combine offers. ALSO at this time I had forgotten my optimum card and the stupid cashier told me I could email my receipt to head office and CALL-IN the points. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Head office told me they would do it for me ONCE as a courtesy and only applied the 20x and not the VIB baby points =( Still not sure of the policy in this case, as it was using double coupons on the same bill, but I had to even explain to them that I still deserve the 20x even though my bill was under $50, as I used many coupons to bring the total less than 50. Needless to say I argued very much to get atleast some points and will never forget my card again.
Make sure you always know more than the cashiers do so they don’t cheat you out of points. Some of them seem to have this mentality that you are stealing from Shoppers Drug Mart by taking advantage of the system in this way. I remind them that SDM is being reimbursed the value of each coupon and is NOT losing money. Also, SDM WANTS us to take advantage of their optimum program or else it would not be advertised as such, or even exist!

I have a question for all of you savvy SDM shoppers…

I’m trying to learn the tricks of the trade, and am wondering if it’s worth it to head in for the 20X event this week. I scanned their website for high point offers, checked out Mrs. J’s “Shoppers Optimum Bonus Point Coupons”…but didn’t really see anything there I need or would use or have high value coupons for (no babies at our house! ; )

So that being the case, is it worth it to go in just to buy sale items, staples like milk, and/or things that are good value for money (with or without coupons)?

      • teachermum says:

        Jan,
What I do in such a case is read the flyer well and make a list of sale things I would buy, at a price I would pay (they aren’t always cheap enough for me!) Then I add them up. If I’m no where near $50 I’m quite likely to skip that promotion. If I can get there, with a bit of room to spare if they are out of something, I’ll shop. I will NOT spend money at Shoppers just to get points. There will be another promotion soon enough. I’m guessing I skip half to 3/4 of them just because I can’t get to the spending threshold easily.

    6. teachermum says:

Shoppers IS very expensive, generally a good 20% over what can be bought at Walmart. BUT, I would never just go in there and buy anything without knowing my prices…but that applies to any store I shop at and anything I buy!

eg Chlor-tripilon, an allergy medication, is $9.99 at Shoppers and $7.69 at Walmart. So I buy it at Walmart, several at a time. But, when shoppers has it on sale for almost the same price and on a 20x day, you can bet I stock up! Lactaid is a good $4 cheaper at Walmart, but not long ago Shoppers had it on sale on a 20x points day for .50 more than Walmart’s prices so I stocked up.

What they DO have is fantastic sale prices. A good 95% of what I ever buy at Shoppers is on sale and on a 20x or 18,500 day. You can’t beat the price anywhere else often and I never count points value towards item prices ie I’ll buy it if it is at my rock bottom price anywhere. Then the points I earn truly are “free” product for me. Most of what I buy would come from the grocery section as well-they really stepped up my shopping when they expanded the stores! I don’t even buy much in the way of processed foods, but their eggs, cheese, cream, cottage cheese, bread and nacho chips prices are often the best in town. I don’t buy milk but see that they are usually the same or cheaper.

It’s all a game and if you don’t know how to play it then yes, way overpriced. Learn the rules and you can make out like a bandit!

(We have on occasion just grabbed a product at Shoppers as we are in the boonies and $2 in gas is better than $5-6 to get into town for a product a few dollars cheaper. That doesn’t happen often though.

    7. Caroline says:

Shoppers is an amazing store. I love their rewards program and they have great sales too. I never buy their regular priced items because yes they are too expensive. In an average year I spend lots of money at Shoppers but also get lots of freebies (I’ll usually only shop on a 20x the points event).

    8. Christie says:

I find Shoppers very expensive and shop only for convenience (e.g. if it’s late and I’m sending my husband out for baby advil) At one time the points seemed really easy to earn through promotions and coupons, but now it seems like it takes ages to build up points and the stakes are higher (why is it usually minimum $75 purchase now for 20x…wasn’t it $50 before).

Sorry to gripe – I guess if you spend the time to compare prices and plan ahead it can be a good deal, but I often fall into the trap of spending money just to earn points!! So I’m avoiding SDM for a while.

    9. Theresa says:

I find Shoppers expensive. I don’t spend money there just to get optimum points. If I need something and they have it at a good price, then I will shop there.

I do have the RBC/Shoppers bank account and I have an optimum card. I do slowly earn enough every few months to get $10 off. I will not shop solely for the purpose of getting points though. I save more money by not shopping there.

    10. Brock Smith says:

Yes, I like the Optimum points program and we always double-dip with a gift card (thank you Cassie!), but I find SDM to be a major headache in the K-W area. I have a bunch of issues with them which barely makes it worthwhile…
      - How many times have you stood in line for too long because they only have one cashier working on a weekend? Have you EVER seen a cashier at every check-out?
      - Would you even consider buying ‘regular-priced’ groceries there? They are WAY overpriced.
      - I absolutely hate the limitations on sales (Sunday/Monday only). No other store does this every week!! And do you remember the awesome Optimum Point promo on 2 for 1 Dairy Milk bars last year. They cancelled it when they realized they were running two promos on the same item at the same time.
      - They never have enough stock on sale items – I’ve often stopped in for a 2L of milk (on sale) only to find they are completely sold out.
      - The cashiers are not trained properly. I’ve had a major problem with them honouring a free item due to the Scanning Code of Practice, and how do they still not know that you get the bonus points when they run the ‘bonus 18,000 optimum points’ and coupons bring you under the $75 total. Come on!!

Now, having said all that – can we get a bonus redemption day already???

      • Theresa says:

Totally agree with Brock about cashiers not being properly trained about Scanning code of practice. At the store near my home, a cashier with years of experience did not know how to ring it in. I told her to ask another cashier that I usually bring mistakes to. The first cashier was embarrassed by the second cashier and stormed away angry. Seriously how can you work in a store 8+ years and not know how to do a SCOP??
