Shoppers Drug Mart Canada: 8,000 Optimum Points When You Spend $150 On Gift Cards

Shoppers Drug Mart has a great promotion going on this week and next.

Receive 8,000 Optimum points when you buy at least 2 gift cards totalling $150.

Gift cards include: Shoppers Drug Mart, Home Depot, Winners, The Keg, iTunes, etc. I’m pretty sure all gift cards are included, but those are the ones that I know are for sure.

You must pay with cash, credit card (not pre-paid) or debit. You can do this offer more than once, but you will need to do separate transactions.

Valid from November 5-18, 2011.

Points will be awarded on November 25, 2011.

Bailey: Usually just once per year.

  2. Bailey says:

Do you know if they do these sales often or just the one time during the year? Thanks

  3. zoe says:

My appologies, I she checked with her supervisor, Mrs. January is correct, however the store is allowed to refuse to accept credit cards to purchase gift cards which my store did.

  4. Zoe says:

I just called Shoppers, and they told me that a financial card is considered credit and debit, that the transaction had to be cash. Which REALLY sucks because I paied with debit card. Did anyone pay with either debit or credit card and still get the points????

  5. Elizabeth says:

This is what I wrote to SDM through the website today – my feedback on this ‘event’.

    Through a friend I learned:

Receive 8,000 Optimum points when you buy at least 2 gift cards totaling $150.

You must pay with cash, credit card (not pre-paid) or debit. You can do this offer more than once, but you will need to do separate transactions.

    Valid from November 5-18, 2011.

Points will be awarded on November 25, 2011.

I went to one of the three SDM in Airdrie, AB (Kings Height store) and I went on Monday November 14. Both Front of the Store Supervisors were unaware of this promotion. The fine print was very small (to read) on the display at the very top (quite high for me to read and I am 6′ tall). With the three of us, we managed to get it all sorted. I did appreciate the one supervisor who ensured that the Gift Card’s last four digits on the receipt matched the actual card. No one has ever pointed that out to me :)

I told me friend about it and she went to the same store, and the employee had no idea what the promotion was about.

My suggestion – have all employees, including management to be aware of all promotions at all times.
There is no where on this website that I can find this Optimum Promotion.
I feel this is poor marketing.

The store will sell more Gift Cards at this time of year, more SDM Gift Cards too, and more Optimum Customers awarded these points.

I think the points system at SDM is absolutely excellent, but feel that you have let down your customers with this great promotion in that it hasn’t been marketed effectively or executed at the cash register (employee knowledge) seamlessly.

  6. Mrs January says:

ger: The points will be awarded on the 25th.

  7. ger says:

hello missj! just wondering. you mentioned that it was a good thing that you brought in the flyer since the cashiers didn’t know about the bonus points on the other cards. does that mean that it doesn’t just come up automatically? do i need to ask the cashier to make sure they will be awarded? also, i’m assuming i’ll see it under the ‘Total Points Earned Today’ but not yet applied to the ‘Current Points Balance’. is that correct? thanks so much in advance. love you site. first time on here. googled Optimum Points Bonus $150 :P

  8. H Wade says:

I stopped by an Oakville Shoppers today and bought 150. worth of gift cards. I asked the cashier if I could get more than one of the 8,000 pt. bonuses and he emphatically stated NO, only one per customer. I asked if I did separate transactions if it would make a difference and he again said NO. I mentioned that I’d seen Mrs. January’s experience of purchasing 16 transactions and he stated that only 1 promotion was allowed per optimum number and anything after the first transaction would be kicked out by head office. Called Shopper’s web number when I got home and they confirmed that as long as separate transactions are used, you can purchase unlimited cards as long as the value is over 150. total and you will get the 8,000 pts. extra. There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there and the individual store cashiers aren’t the best ones to ask.

  9. Mrs January says:

H Wade: It will probably last us a good 6 months or so. The value of points I earned, compared to what I would earn in interest if the money sat in the bank, is MUCH higher. This was definetely the best choice for us.

  10. Marnie says:

Thanks Eric, I found a flyer and went to the store yesterday. Good thing I had the flyer, as the cashiers didn’t know what I was talking about when I said I get points on all the gift cards, not just the Pharmaprix cards.

  11. eric says:

Marnie: For Quebec residents, the Pharmaprix ad about the gift cards is on page 6 of the Pharmaprix flyer.

  12. H Wade says:

How long do you expect it will take to use up all these gift cards that you purchased? Just wondering, since you’ve tied up a fair bit of cash. If it takes you a year to go through them all, then someone else has your money until then rather than you. I know interest rates aren’t great right now but one would have to crunch numbers to decide whether buying this many makes sense.

  13. Jaclyn says:

Hey Cassie if you got all those points that would be amazing! Just wondering though I was told that even if you do separate transactions you only get the 8000 bonus points once…? I looked online and it said nothing about there being a limit to how many bonus points you get… I would like to buy more but not sure now since the points don’t get added until the sale is over? Would be great if you could confirm that you do get the bonus points on every transaction over $150 and not just once per optimum card. Thanks so much Cassie, you rock! Prepaid food and goods with a bonus, it’s a win-win :) Thanks!

  14. Mrs January says:

    Jamie: http://www1.shoppersdrugmart.ca/en/Shoppers-Optimum/All-Optimum-Offers/GiftCards.aspx

Tracey: You certainely CAN use credit cards. “Financial” cards means pre-made credit cards.

Christie: They mean a pre-paid credit card.

  15. Gina says:

Did anyone’s bonus points show on your receipt? My receipt only has my regular purchase points. Usually it shows the bonus but doesn’t add into the total until the day they say but my receipt doesn’t show the points at all. Not sure if I should go back and ask.

My Shoppers in Alberta also told me that SDM gift cards were excluded from the deal. :(

  16. Michelle says:

I went to shoppers and got 155.00 dollars worth of gift cards and the points didnt show up. So i went to customer service and they had to manually award it. But now i see on Mrs January that the points won’t be awarded till November 25 opps. Does that mean ill get it twice lol. I love it when they dont post information like that and no one in the store knows about the new promotions. I might just get double the points!!!

  17. Christie says:

When they say “Cannot use financial card” in the small print do they mean like a Visa gift card?? or an actual Visa?

  18. Shannon says:

It looks like it can’t be a pre-paid credit card or gift card.. says you won’t get the points if you use of one these two payment types and points are now awarded right away.. I plan to go get some gas cards and a few other early Christmas gifts.. why not it’s things I would use anyway!

  19. Tracey says:

Just wanted to let you know that you CANNOT use credit cards to pay for this promo for gift cards and 8000 points. Says so in fine print on the bottom of the flyer. I work at SDM and I looked into it when a customer didn’t get her bonus points.

  20. Jamie says:

The other store says that I am eligible for more than one transaction and would get extra points! Hmm…

  21. Jamie says:

Hmm… My store says that it is limited to one transaction / bonus points per customer! I couldn’t find more details on the flyer or on the website. :( Where would I find more info on this, Mrs. January? :D

  22. Ann says:

The shoppers that I use would’nt let me do more than one transaction!!!

  23. Heather says:

Hi marnie, it is on the back page in very small print in the Pharmaprix flyer.

  24. Laura says:

What gas cards did you get? I went to 2 SDM and no gas cards.

  25. Marnie says:

    Thanks!

  26. Mrs January says:

    Rachel: About $17.

Marnie: I can’t say with certainty, but I don’t see it excluded in my flyer, so it should be okay. Call your local store to be sure.

  27. Rachel says:

Can anyone tell me how much 8,000 points would be worth on a bonus redemption weekend? I’m so bad about Optimum points and I never know how much is a lot. :-)

  28. Marnie says:

Is this available in Quebec also? I don’t see it in the Pharmaprix flyer. Thanks.

  29. Mrs January says:

    Yes you can. :)

  30. susan says:

question? So I can buy 2 $75 shoppers cards earn the 8,000 points and then the same day go back and purchase items with these cards? I have some beauty items I want to purchase and get 20x the points… so I can use one of the cards for this purchase?

  31. Jessica says:

thanks! Perfect time to stock up on my SDM cards!

  32. Lauren says:

No kidding? Wow, that’s a pretty good deal!! Thanks!
