  • How I Saved Over $200 Per Year On Our Cable/Phone/Internet Bill

I’ve been trying to find ways to cut our monthly expenses and one of those ways was to lower our cable/phone/internet package (it’s all bundled together to make it cheaper). I called up the company and told them I would like to somehow cut my bill, without changing my current packages and asked them what they could do for me. I told them that if I couldn’t get my bill lowered, I was going to have to look into another company. I was polite, but made it clear that I had no problem leaving them for another company that could give me a better rate for the same packages.

The customer service representitive was very nice and checked for a bunch of different solutions for me. When she asked what my budget was, I told her I would like my bill to be around $100 (it was almost $138 at the time). It took a little bit, but eventually she came up with a discount of about $10 a month. I told her I really appreciated her efforts but was still not comfortable with that amount. I asked if there was anything else she could do for me and she said no, so I requested to speak with a manager.

Well, the manager was not available, so I left a message for them and they called me back the next morning. I told the lady the same thing I had told the customer service representitive. I wanted to keep my cable/phone/internet packages the same, but needed to somehow lower my bill. It took a good 30 minutes for the manager to check a bunch of stuff, but eventually she told me that she could make my bill go from $138 to $121, which was a savings of $17 per month or $204 per year. The only stipulation was that this promotion was only valid for 1 year. I thought about it, and decided that $17 a month savings is better than $0 a month savings and in 1 year when the promotion period is supposed to end, I will just call them back and ask to have it extended. I said yes to the manager.

Our bill is now $121 per month and we didn’t have to change our current packages. All I had to do was call the company and simply ASK for a discount. I know it doesn’t seem as simple as calling someone and just flat out ASKING them to make your bill lower, but trust me – it works! Not all the time of course, but more often than not, it works. Companies want to keep you as a customer and will do what it takes to make you happy.

So what are you waiting for? Call someone and ask for a discount! The worst thing that can happen is that they say no. It’s worth a shot, don’t you think?

Dawnmichelle: Congrats, that is an awesome amount of savings every month. I agree that it’s very important to look over your bills to make sure you are not overpaying.

My husband works at minimum wage right now and I am on Ontario Disability. Between the two of us we bring in less then two thousand a month. We have two teenage sons, so using coupons and budgeting our bills are important for our family. I went through our cable/internet/phone bill and we were almost paying 200. a month. I saw that every month we were going over our GB on the internet from the boys downloading on their game system. I also was paying 20. a month for unlimited long distance in the Canada and US but when I looked at the actual min. used I used less then 500 min. so I switched to the 500 min. a month for 4.99 upped my GB on the internet so we were not charged for every GB over (3.99 for every Gig over) and then I really thought about what do we watch on tv and really all we needed was basic and the Movie channels. Our newest bill was 80.00 dollars less a month. Plus because our contract was over and we renewed with the same company we get an extra 5.00 off a month. I suggest that people really look at their bill, go online and check out your companies packages you could save a lot of money.

You are so smart. You invested a lot of time, and some bravery, to get that deal. Good for you.
