  • Costco Deals Canada Nov2012

I did something a bit crazy today. Something I never thought I’d do – I bought a membership to Costco.

My friend Lori convinced me to check it out with all of the posts she shares about clearance deals that she finds there (I didn’t have much luck with those today).

I plan to do a comparison shop the next time I can make it over there without the kids, but today I just did a quick walk around to see what they carried (and of course I bought a few things – but they were things we needed). Here’s what I bought:

    Costco Canada Deals:

    1x Kirkland Greek Yogurt, 3 Pack @ $8.69
    1x Icing Sugar, 1kg @ $1.59
    1x Brown Sugar, 2kg @ $2.69
    1x Pure Vanilla Extract, 473mL @ $6.89
    1x Tetley Tea, 300 Count @ $12.99
    9x Bananas @ $1.69
    1x Compost Bags, 100 Pack @ $9.79
    1x Huggies Pull-Ups, 96 Pack @ $35.99
    Tax @ $3.07

    Total Paid = $83.39

Do you shop at Costco? Any tips for me the next time I shop there?

I have been a member of Costco’s since the middle 90′s. I don’t have any kids, it’s just my husband and I, but I always buy items in bulk so they last me a very long time, things like baked beans and KD etc. I usually buy my laundry detergent and fabric softener there also. It will usually last me almost the whole year, give or take a month.

Same with my multi-vitamins. I buy the biggest one there, and it also usually lasts me the whole year.

Did you take the Executive Membership? It’s 50$ (or 45$) dollars more and you get a 1 or 2% refund at the end of the year. It is satisfaction guarantee so if you don’t end up getting enough to cover the difference, they will refund it to you (even after you get the check).

For example you pay the 50$ but only earn a 36$ refund. before your membership expires you go to customer service and they will refund you the other 14$. On the positive side you could end up earning a big refund.

If you do it later they can only usually credit you with the last 2 weeks or so of purchases.

The the regular membership for me. I’m not going to go all in right away. I want to test it out and see if it’s right for my family first.

I like having the membership for filling up on gas and filling prescriptions. Vastly cheaper medication compared to even Superstore, plus a lower dispensing fee. I save probably $25 per month. HOWEVER, I found out that you do not have to have a membership to access the pharmacy. By law they have to sell you medication whether you have membership or not. Just tell the greeter that you are going to fill a prescription.

I buy most of my meat at Costco – except pork chops – they cut them too thick. A great buy there is the garbage bags, both kitchen and outdoors. The other thing I love are the big rolls of Christmas paper. I’m still working on rolls I bought 3 years ago…..and I buy/wrap a lot of gifts. My son is an employee so we don’t have to pay for our membership card…..that helps, too.

I think the other benefit of using costco is they have their own coupons that they send out via email so that can really benefit someone who shops there I believe you can join from their website. Although not absolutely sure, next time I get them in my inbox I will check the site and send it along.
I do not shop at costco which is why the coupons have not an interest to me unless they can be utilized at Walmart and most of the time they are not compatable.

Watch for anything ending in .97. Those items are on clearance and the prices are fabulous.

We’re lucky, Costco is around the corner from our house, so it has lost its novelty appeal. I go with a list, by myself, about once a month. I do not buy produce there – have found that the packages are really more than we need, the individual fruits are larger than we need to be eating, and there is no cost savings – EXCEPT on berries in season. Definitely wait for Costco coupons on many products. Dishwasher tabs: buy the cheap ones, they work just fine, avoid the pricey name brands. Usually not worth buying paper products at Costco compared to sale + coupon deals at the grocery store. I always buy maple syrup at Costco, wish they put it on special more often!

We always buy our veggies from Costco. Frozen and “fresh”. You can get huge bags (unsure of the exact size since I am out and need to go tomorrow!!) of Normandy frozen green and yellow beans and baby carrots for $4 and some change, and also bags of frozen broccoli, cauliflour, sliced yellow carrots and also baby carrots for $6.89 or something like that. These bags do us quite awhile and I steam veggies pretty much every night. Also in the cold room area you will find all kinds of salad type things, so you can get a pack of 6 romaine hearts for a little over $4, bags of washed and cut broccoli for a litle over $5, cleaned and cut celery for a little over $3 and a huge bag of baby carrots for a little over $5. I HAVE to have 1/2 & 1/2 for my coffee and it’s usually $2 something but sometimes $1.99. I LOVE their crossiants and muffins too! But don’t splurge on those as much!

One thing that I always buy at costco (no acceptions) is my baby wipes. We love the Kirkland brand wipes and frankly if I could attach them to my swiffer to clean my floor I would because they work so good for cleaning pretty much anything (including kids). Anyway they work out to about 0.02 a wipe wich I think is a great deal as well.
A few other things that I always get at costco is Nesquick. I can never find coupons for it and a small bottle (453 ml) is about 5.99 in my town. At costco a GIGANTIC bottle is 8.99.

I’ve had a Costco membership for years and started couponing just this year. If you know your prices, you will see what turns out to be a good deal at Costco. Some times Costso is good and sometimes not. Thanks to those who posted when clearance items are available. I’ve rarely found them like Frugal Edmonton.

The dispensing fee at the Costco pharmacy is amazing. Only $3.89 compared to $12-15 at drug stores. AND you do not have to be a member to use the pharmacy. Down side: pharmacy takes only Amex and Mastercard I believe.
