  • Organic Garage: Organic Grocery Shopping Trip

Today was our first day buying organic only groceries, and it was absolutely exhausting.

I had no idea what I was doing when we went shopping. I didn’t prepare a shopping list in advance because I was only planning on purchasing sale items (and the stores we went to didn’t really have any sales posted online to create a list from).

I had a list of things we needed (like flour, eggs and milk) and then just planned to get the cheapest produce they had.

We decided to try health food stores this week. Organic Garage was recommended to me by a reader (thanks, Sonia!), so we went there first.

The first thing I noticed was the confusing layout. I didn’t know where to go when I first walked in. I had this same feeling as I made my way around the entire store. I felt as though I was walking in circles. Maybe I’m just so used to the layout at my local Walmart.

They had plenty of produce, but most of it was way more expensive than I was willing to pay.

The most shocking prices were in the refrigerated section. The average price for eggs was $7 and milk (4L) was around $10. Ouch.

Another thing I noticed about this store is that I felt very unwelcome. Other shoppers rudely walked past me, bumping into my cart and not bothering to say sorry. Store employees never even looked at me. I felt as though I didn’t really fit in.

I did find some things to purchase, but as hard as I tried, I’m not sure they are all 100% organic. I did my best (everything had the word “organic” on it) and checked out. Here’s what I bought:

    Organic Garage

    1x 2pk Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast @ $13.42
1x Stone Ground Whole Wheat Flour @ $2.47
    1x Dozen Eggs @ $6.97
    1x Skim Milk 4L @ $8.55
    1x Carrots 2lb @ $1.97
    1x Baby Spinach @ $2.97
    1x Strawberries 1lb @ $3.97
    12x Bananas @ $0.97/lb. = $3.91
    4x Oranges @ $1.47/lb. = $2.15
    1x Cauliflower @ $1.97
    1x Green Leaf Lettuce @ $1.97
    3x Potatoes @ $1.97/lb. = $2.74

    Total Paid = $53.06

Final thoughts: I will not go back to Organic Garage. Although the food looked and tasted amazing, the prices and the store atmosphere were not good enough to turn me into a return customer.

This store is also a 20 minute drive from our house, so that’s another bad thing.

I’ve recently heard of another store in Toronto that sells both produce and meat as well as the dry and canned goods. As far as i’m aware most if not all are organic and there’s even suppose to be a natural health section.
