    Wanigan: Organic Grocery Shopping Trip

Last week I tried shopping at organic grocery stores, so this week I wanted to experience organic grocery delivery.

After searching for hours one day, I could only find one place that delivered more than just produce (and didn’t want to charge me a fee to sign up) – Wanigan.

They had a great selection of various grocery items available for delivery, at prices that were similar (and sometimes less) to the prices I paid at the stores last week. The only thing they didn’t have, that I was disappointed about, was milk and meat.

    Here’s what I purchased:

    1x Broccoli @ $2.65
    1x Almonds 200g @ $4.58
    1x Hot House Tomato @ $1.48
    1x Blueberries 1/2 Pint @ $2.59
    1x Chick Peas @ $2.55
    1x Green Leaf Lettuce @ $2.25*
    1x Carrots 2lb @ $2.48
    1x Cumin 13g @ $2.83
    1x Thyme 5g @ $2.83
    1x Gala Apples 3lb @ $6.85
    6x Bananas @ $2.85*
    2x Dozen Eggs @ $5.99 each = $11.98*

    Total = $45.92 ($35.83 after credit – see below)

I received my delivery this morning:

I thought for sure it would come in a big sturdy box (I received organic produce delivery before and that’s what it came in), so was not very excited to see all of my food in a big bag.

They rang the doorbell, left the bag on my porch and took off before I even had a chance to get to the door.

Here is everything that was inside:

In case you’re wondering – yes, I’m missing a carton of eggs. They didn’t bring it. There were 2 other issues with my delivery:

    1. The lettuce was completely wilted and unusable.
    2. The bananas were very brown (a few were almost black!) and needed to be frozen or used immediately to prevent spoiling.

Annoyed at the poor quality of those items and the missing eggs, I called Wanigan to explain my issues.

One of the things I dislike about this company is that you can never get a hold of a real person. You always get an answering machine. Fortunately, they do seem to return your phone calls rather quickly.

The lady that I spoke to was very polite and told me she would apply a refund to my credit card for the bananas, lettuce and eggs, but I was surprised when she did not offer an apology of any kind.

Final thoughts: I will not order from Wanigan again. I did love their online selection, but was not at all satisfied with the quality of the food.

    1. Stacy Reynolds says:

Just a tip I learned recently from a market worker for wilted lettuce, this is something they do. He said the lettuce usually is wilted from shipping when they get it. If you put it in room temp. water for about half an hour and then into the fridge it is suppose to crisp up. I have not tried it yet to let you know for sure if this works. He also said this works for broccoli too.
