Dining Room Table & Chairs Redo – Before & After

Did I ever post about the dining room set (table, 4 chairs, buffet and hutch) that I bought off of Craigslist a few months ago? I can’t remember. Anywho, I did buy it. It was $250 for the set and when I brought it home I liked it. The next day, I HATED it. The colour, anyway. So without even thinking, I sanded and primed everything (except the buffet & hutch). I was going to paint it all black.

Ummmm.. yeah.

When the primer dried, you could run your fingernail across it and it would come off – easily. I hardly sanded the stuff at all, apparently. It was pretty brutal. We left the table and chairs the white streaky primer colour for weeks, trying to figure out what to do next.

One day my dad came over for a visit and almost had a heart attack when he saw what I’d done to the table and chairs. He asked me why I wanted to paint it instead of stain (after he tried to convince me that the horrible orange colour looked good – nice try, Dad!) and I told him that I wanted it black and there is no black stain, just dark browns. WRONG! There is black stain, just so you know. I am dumb. I should have done my research.

In the end, we decided to sand everything and STAIN it all black.

AND IT TOOK FOREVER. It was so hard to get the primer off as well as the varnish from the original stain. We went through a whole can of paint stripper and about a billion sheets of sandpaper. We had to use a metal brush to get into all of the grooves of the chairs and OMG KILL ME. I wanted to DIE. It was SO ANNOYING.

I whined to my dad about it and he volunteered to help. Hooray! Every time he came over he would help us by sanding everything. It was still taking forever. I swear this was the LONGEST PROJECT EVER. I felt like such a moron for taking on such a large task for my first real project. I suck.

Last week my dad was on holidays and he said he would come and stay over for a few days and GET ‘ER DONE. I love him. I hardly did any work at all because I was inside taking care of Elliott while he finished sanding and then did the staining outside on the porch and in the garage. I felt so bad. :( I will have to do something extra special to thank him for all of his hard work!

The table looks GREAT! Exactly how I wanted it to look. I’m so happy with the results. We decided not to do the buffet and hutch at all because it was such a long and annoying process with the table & chairs. I will probably just sell it. Or… sand and stain it? OMG I AM NUTS. I’m nuts right? PLEASE TALK ME OUT OF IT!

Here is what the table and chairs look like now (and before):

(I know the angles are all wrong and the picture quality sucks. Sorry!)

Thanks, Dad!

Aren’t dads the greatest! (Mine’s been helping me too)!

The table and chairs turned out awesome (and you know you’ll be happiest when you finish the buffet and hutch because it’ll all look totally awesome).

    Regards,

    Shelley
