    Homemade Applesauce

    I can’t believe how easy it is to make applesauce. I’ve been making ours for the last year and I wish I had started sooner.

    Not only does homemade applesauce taste much better than store-bought, it’s also a lot cheaper to make it yourself.

    Homemade Applesauce Recipe


    • Servings: 6

    Ingredients:

    • 8 Apples, Peeled, Cored and Chopped
    • 1 1/2 – 2 Cups Water
    • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
    • 1/8 Teaspoon Nutmeg
    • 1/2 Tablespoon Cinnamon
    • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla

    Instructions:

    1. Combine apples, sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla in a large pot.
    2. Cover and cook over medium heat for 20 minutes.
    3. Puree in a blender or food processor. You can also mash them yourself if you like your applesauce a bit chunky.

      I was just in here browsing the recipes looking for something new, I stumbled across this as was reading the other reader post and thought that I would mention my Applesauce…

      My son loves my homemade applesauce. I cut and core the apples, then I throw them into my magic bullet with a splash of water. I find that cooking them adds time and with toddlers patients is not a strong skill. Also I often add other fruit with it too, berries, pears, mangos. Its great!

      I just made this recipe and you are right it’s BETTER then store bought! I used discounted apples and ate some while still warm it was so good. Highly recommend people trying this one out.

      I have never tried the flavourings, just apples and a bit of water, but that does sound tasty. My mum put sugar in but always did a few jars for me without. If you have canning jars in the hot oven and the rings/lids in hot water on the stove you can ladle the hot applesauce right into those, put the lids on and they will seal very quickly and last for ages. As long as everything is hot and the lids pop you are good to go. You can’t beat it fresh off the stove though!
      For the best applesauce, use several different varieties of apples (and it’s a great way to get rid of the not so crispy skinned ones!). I have used my apple peeler to quickly process lots of apples and only a rough mash is needed when they are cooked as the slices are quite thin. I personally found it easier than using the food mill, but that was me.

      Great post!!! Our baby loves homemade apple puree, with nothing added at all. Like Wendy, I save tons of time by just processing them with the skins on, using my tomato press from Lee Valley: http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?p=44040&cat=2,2120 . An elderly neighbour gives me bags of apples in Fall and I boiled them up for a few mins, then churn them through the press, and out comes vast amount of apple sauce, easy peasy. I processed about 200 apples in 2 hours, all for free!!

      If you keep cooking applesauce down, it eventually becomes apple butter. In the fall my FIL gives us a bushel of apples from his tree and we make apple butter which I can and store for use year round.

      You are much more precise than I am!! I just cut up some apples, put enough water in to cover the bottom of the pot and up the sides a little and then cook it until the apples start to fall apart and turn to sauce. I sometimes add cinnamon but hardly ever add anything. I use Macintosh apples and find that they are sweet enough for our taste. I have kept it in the fridge for a couple of weeks on rare occasions but it is usually gone in a few days.

      For even easier method, don’t peel the apples, just cook them with the skins on, then put through a sieve or food mill after they are all cooked. Skins add a lovely pink – red colour to your applesauce, and you don’t have to peel all those apples first. I use white sugar, and nutmeg only for flavour.
