A more nutritious breakfast would be to use Regular or even Steel Cut oats for maximum nutritional value. I combine slow-cooking oats, flax seed and a touch of organic maple sugar (found at Costco). In the morning, I add water (3 parts water to one part oatmeal mixture) and cook in the microwave until the oatmeal bubbles through the microwave door onto the floor. Then I know it's done! Seriously, I put the mixture in a large bowl, set it on a curved dinner plate, cover it and cook for 5-6 minutes. If it's too thick, add water and reheat.
Great for the person on a diet, too. Oatmeal is very filling and keeps you feeling full longer. Much better for kids, too!

I bought soy powdered milk so my daughter who is lactose intolerant can eat them. I also read on another site that if you grind 1/4 of the oats to a fine powder in you blender or food processor the texture will be more similar to the store bought packages. Excited to try it. Thanks!

Thanks for this great recipe. I have teenagers who ask for the packets with the dinosaurs still..... I checked out the nutrition facts since I have a husband with high blood pressure and was SHOCKED by how much sodium was in one of those packs of oatmeal. Needless to say, no more dinos for the boys. I'll try these with them and see how it goes. Thanks for a great site and all the good info. Good luck with your new addition!

I love my morning oatmeal. I always do 1/2 cup oatmeal to 1 cup water and 1/2 cup frozen fruit on top, cook 2.5 minutes. That seems to keep it from bubbling over. Also, if using dried fruit, put it in before microwaving so that the fruit plumps up.

Great site!
