  • Homemade Lasagna Recipe

You know how people often say that homemade is always better than store-bought foods?

    Those people are right.

This homemade lasagna is SO simple to make and is always delicious. The great thing about this recipe is that you can do so much to it. You can use other types of ground meat, you can add spinach or other greens – make it your own!

    Homemade Lasagna Recipe

    • Servings: 4-6

    Ingredients:

    - 1 Package Lasagna Noodles
    - 1 Pound Ground Beef
    - 2 Cups Mozzarella Cheese
    - 1 Cup Parmesan Cheese
    - 4 Cups Tomato Sauce (We use our Homemade Pasta Sauce)

    Instructions:

    1. Cook lasagna noodles according to package directions. Rinse with cold water, drain and set aside.

    2. Cook the ground beef until it is browned, then add in your tomato sauce and simmer for 15-20 minutes.

    3. Pre-heat oven to 375F.

    4. Add a bit of sauce to the bottom of a 9×13 baking pan (or you can spray it with cooking oil) to prevent the first layer of noodles from sticking.

    5. Add cooked lasagna noodles to the pan (4 or 5 is usually good), then add your meat/tomato sauce mixture and a generous handful of mozzarella cheese. Repeat this process until all of your ingredients (except parmesan cheese) are gone.

    6. Add parmesan cheese to the final layer of lasagna.

    7. Cover pan with aluminum foil and bake for 25-30 minutes.

    8. Remove foil from the pan and broil for another 3-4 minutes (just to add a nice browning on top).

Sounds great ! I add a pkg of dry knorr’s veg soup mix and it adds so much flavor. Yumm.

I don’t bother boiling the noodles first. It takes time and I always end up burning my fingers. I figured out years ago that you can use regular noodles (not the oven-ready) and just add an extra 3/4 cup or so of water to the sauce. Just make sure all of the noodles are submerged under the sauce when you’re done with your layers. If not, add a bit of water to cover them. The lasagna’s ready when you can easily insert a knife. And one more tip: Let the lasagna sit for 5-10 minutes after removing from the oven so it “firms up” and stays together when you cut it. I use cottage cheese with an egg as an extra layer and that helps it firm up, too.

Mine is very similar, however I use the oven ready noodles…saves time and energy!

Erin: It really depends on where you buy your ingredients. I always try to buy things on sale to get the best value.

I make ours fairly simple as well, though always include mushrooms and never parmesan…the menfolk grate theirs on after as the womanfolk don’t care for it!

Erin, I have priced out mine, but with the ingredients I would use.
2 lb hamburger (pretend it is $2/pound on sale rather than the grass fed we have!)
16 whole wheat lasagna noodles (about $2)
3 cans of mushrooms or 2 x 8 oz fresh mushrooms (about $2)
500 g block of mozzerella ($4 or bit less, that’s all I’ll pay)
3 cans Hunts spaghetti sauce ($3)

All that makes a 4 layer lasagna in my 10 x 15 pan (a bit deeper than 9×13, that only holds 3 layers) which is 8 servings of about a 5″x4″ piece, so under $2/serving. There is enough sauce leftover to use as spaghetti sauce for our family of 4 adults for one meal or add some chunks of cheese and call it lazy lasagna (box of whole wheat rotini, 1/4 block cheese cut into cubes or shredded and the sauce mixed all together). So, in total, about $16 for 3 suppers for us. Cheaper if you use white pasta, can get hamburger for $1.69/lb and someone would have a darn sale on canned mushrooms for .49!!!

I make mine with our home-made tomato sauce as well. And, instead of dry noodles I use the fresh ones, so much better. I also add spinach, boiled crushed eggs , black olives, green peppers, and mushrooms. Hearty, my family love it, and so easy to whip if you have the ingredients at hand.

      Hi Cassie,

How much do you think your lasagna costs to make? I find some receipts can cost a lot to make.

      Thanks
