    Homemade Croutons

We have been enjoying lots of salad now that the weather is warming up. I don’t know what it is about the warm weather that makes me want to eat salad all the time. I crave it like crazy!

Along with our homemade balsamic dressing (which I will be posting the recipe for in the next few weeks), we often top off our salads with homemade croutons. Not only are they much cheaper than the store-bought variety, but I find that they taste much better as well.

    2. Cut stale bread into small, bite-size pieces and place on a baking sheet.
    3. Drizzle a bit of olive oil onto to bread pieces and then sprinkle with herbs.
    4. Mix so that all croutons are evenly covered in oil and herbs.
    5. Bake in pre-heated oven for 5 minutes or until lightly browned and crispy.

Dee: You don’t have to defrost them. I also don’t keep them in the fridge – just the freezer. I use them as needed (they don’t need to thaw.. well maybe for a few minutes).

      Hey Ladies,
Great idea about saving those pesky bread ends that nobody in my family cares for. My question is do you have to let them defrost before baking them? And if you make them in big batches, and keep them in the fridge, dont they go mushy? Thanks :)

I have been doing this for years too. I learned this trick in cooking class in high school. Saving the bread ends is another great idea too. Unfortunately I have been tainted by the wontons for salad which I try to buy once in awhile as a treat cause they are amazing!

wakeforsoul – I also keep all of the bred ends in a bag in the freezer until there is enough to make some croutons.. I actually made a batch a few nights ago. :)

I’ve been doing this for a long time. My husband and the kids love them! Another great idea, that I do, I take all the ends of my bread and cute them into cubes when the bag of bread is done. I throw them all in one bag in the freezer until I have a lot and do a huge batch at a time. I then put them in a container and leave them in the fridge until we are ready to eat them. I sometimes add red pepper flakes to give them some kick for me and my husband since we like hot things.
You are def. not the only one that has that thing with Salad in the summer. We eat it almost every night with our meals. Love fresh salad and croutons!!

    6. Mrs January says:

They are so quick and easy to make too, I don’t know why anyone would ever buy them from the store!

I just started making my own croutons as well and agree that they do taste much better than store bought ones and are WAY cheaper too!! Can’t wait for your salad dressing recipe!!
