Homemade Nesquik

Here’s a frugal tip sent in by Christina.

The cost of a large can of Nesquik is around $5 (depending on where you buy it). The other night we ran out, and the store didn’t have any in stock, so I came home and made chocolate syrup.

It’s even better than the powder, better ingredients, and I save money! It’s also very easy to make.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of cocoa powder
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla
  • dash of salt

Mix everything together in a small pot and then bring to a boil; stirring constantly. Let it boil for 1 minute (keep stirring) and then remove from heat. Let it cool completely and you are done!

I store it in a glass bottle in the fridge.

    Oh my goodness. I should have never read this.lol I banded myself from buying choco syrup because late at night I would get a choco craving and dip peanut butter in it.heehee. I thought I was safe if it wasn’t in the house. Ah oh, now I can make it. I don’t know if I should say thanks or not.haha!

    Technically, there is nothing in the ingredients that absolutely has to be refrigerated. I would guess this would have a life span of at least a couple weeks.

    It also makes great ice cream topper and can be used in any recipe calling for chocolate syrup.

    I think I’m going to try this with Splenda instead of sugar. I can’t have a lot of sugar and the sugar free chocolate milk is so hard to find, not to mention I have issues paying $5 or more for a litre of chocolate milk. Thanks for the idea!
