Wondering what the best things to buy in August are? Look no further!

As I’m sure many of you know, stores follow a yearly sales cycle, so with a few exceptions, you can usually anticipate finding the same products on sale at the same time every year.

Here’s what you can expect to find on sale in August:

    Back to School Supplies

There are a plethora of sales on back to school supplies in August (especially around the end of the month), so now is the time to stock up on things like pens & pencils, binders, paper (including printer paper), glue, scissors, staplers, crayons, markers and more.

This is the best time all year to buy these items, as this is when they will be the cheapest, so if you’re able to, buy a year’s supply.

    School Lunch Items

August is one of the best months of the year to buy lunch items such as lunch boxes, crackers, bread, peanut butter, jams/jellies, snack items (pudding/Jell-O, granola bars), lunch meat and packaged meals such as Lunchables (or you could make your own).

    Linens

As many college and university students are getting ready to head back to school, stores are lowering prices on linens to allow students to get these household items inexpensively.

Look for sheet sets, blankets, pillows, towels, and more. You can even find bathroom items such as bath mats and shower curtains on sale.

    Swimwear

If you need new swimwear, now is the best time to buy it! With discounts as high as 75% off in August, you will get the best bang for your buck if you buy your swimwear now, instead of next year.

Some stores even offer discounts higher than 75% off, just to clear their shelves!

    Laptops

Schools are cashing in on back to school season by offering some nice discounts on laptops for students that need one.

If you can’t wait until the end of the year to buy a laptop (which is when you can find the best prices on them and desktop computers), now is the time to pick one up.

    Backpacks

You will never find a better price on backpacks than you will in August, so if you need to purchase one (or more), this is the time.

Of course, the longer into the month you wait, the slimmer the selection will be, so keep that in mind.

    Cereal

Cereal is an easy breakfast and when you have children to get ready for school in the morning, quick breakfasts are lifesaver!

Be on the lookout for fantastic deals on cereal in August – there will be many.

    Produce on sale in August:

Apricots, Bananas, Blueberries, Cantaloupe, Grapes, Grapefruit, Kiwi, Lemons, Mangoes, Papayas, Peaches, Pears, Plums, Raspberries, Watermelon, Artichokes, Beans, Beets, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Corn, Cucumber, Eggplant, Lettuce, Mushrooms, Onions, Peppers, Potatoes, Radishes, Spinach, Squash, Sweet Potatoes, Tomatoes, Zucchini

Waiting until just the right moment to buy something is one of the best things you can do to save money. Unless you need it right away, hold off on any purchase you need to make until it is the best time to buy.

Do you wait until August to purchase any of the above items?

The Best Things to Buy in August

I didn’t see a post about dollar stores? I bought back packs from TCP last year just before school started and they are being passed down this year for the younger ones to use for daycare. I think I paid less than 1/2 price for the back pack and matching lunch bag. I then bought one for 2.99 after school started. There were no real choices left though. I bought this years for about $16 a set(lunch bag and back pack) – 30% off when you buy 4 and 30% off with an e-mail code. I’m happy – they are good quality and last. Last years are still like new (after being washed) and got dragged to school by a 4 year old! The lunch bag has held up after numerous washings!

Costco has Roots backpacks for $19.99.

I find that backpacks come on dirt cheap AFTER school has started, so I often buy a year (or two!) ahead of time. Last year, in October, I picked up licensed backpacks for $5 at Walmart; not the greatest quality, but the characters my 3 school-aged kids love change so often, it’s okay if the bag only lasts one school year. The best deal I got last year, though, was at The Children’s Place: high quality backpacks marked down to $4.99 in November PLUS I had a percentage off coupon from being on their email list.

Thanks so much for your August sale tips.
It boggles my mind when people think they’re getting the best deals at places like Dollarama when in fact they could save more buying better quality school supplies at a large retailer.
Dollar stores do have their merits but not when pens run out of ink the first week of school.

I don’t know about backpacks, cheap ones that tend to fall apart are normally everywhere for back to school, I paid 50$ for a Dakine bag almost 5 years ago and it’s still going. And I’m pretty rough with those things! I’m also told the MEC ones are pretty sturdy.

this is a very helpful list for this month, I’m going to keep an eye out for these things to buy for back to school

For years I have bought school supplies for my younger brother and recently for myself in the states at Walmart. The prices are much cheaper then they are here. You can often get Crayola markers for $1, notebooks for under 20 cents and lots of other stationary for under a dollar. As for groceries Ive noticed the week or two before school starts is the best time to stock up on groceries. A lot of the grocery stores will have dollar sales at that time.

Everything that goes on sale this month is something we need. I am going to school this fall so obviously need the school supplies. My family goes through cereal and lunch items so quickly. I have linens and a bathing suit for me on my fridge door that we desperately need!! How lucky!
