Shopping For Organic Groceries: Our June 2012 Challenge

My husband and I have decided to start a new challenge next month. I am very excited about it – and very nervous as well!

For the entire month of June, we plan to only purchase organic groceries. We are sticking to the same grocery budget that we currently have for groceries, which is $400 monthly.

This challenge is going to include all groceries – not just food and beverages.

    Grocery Items Included:
    - Household Items
    - Health & Beauty Items
    - Pet Items
    - Baby Items
    - Food & Beverages

Those are the items we regularly purchase with our grocery budget, so we are going to stick to the same list for our organics challenge.

However, I don’t think we will be purchasing many household, health, beauty or baby items, because we already have quite a few of those in our stockpile.

I will still be shopping for “regular” groceries, but am only be allowed to pick them up if they are free (not including taxes). There is a maximum budget of $20 to cover these taxes.

We will also be allowing ourselves to eat non-organic foods if they are already in our stockpile.

I’m really looking forward to shopping for organic items and seeing if I am able to feed our family the same types of foods for the same amount of money we currently spend.

Throughout the month, I will be sharing our grocery shopping deals, as well as posting articles about purchasing organic groceries.

If you currently buy organic groceries, do you have any advice for us?

I agree with growing your own. It’s much cheaper and I know I love knowing where my produce is coming from and that it’s pesticide free and non-GMO.

Beretta Farms is good, but I find them pricey. Get involved with a local meat and produce co-op and you’ll get better pricing. We love our meat co-op!

Although I can’t suggest where to go for organics I can suggest the above link for availability of vegetables and fruits in season and available in supermarkets.

Hope this helps you decide which organics you can find!

If you look up “clean 15″ vegetables, you can find veggies that don’t get much spray. Those are safer to buy in the grocery store. Buy organic veggies that have heavy pesticide use. It’s almost impossible to buy non-GMO corn. http://www.thedailygreen.com/healthy-eating/eat-safe/Save-on-Sustainable-Gallery-44032808

Organic fruits and veggies – great way to get this is to plant a garden.
You do not have to buy organic fruits and veggies that have a thick skin, since they are not as affected by pesticides or pests.

Broccoli is naturally pest resistant so does not need to be bought organic.

In excited to see the results. We have moved to gluten free for some products and Costco has some budget friendly options. That being said in terms of organic farmers markets give you great options and buying less I will pick up fruit for 2-3 days max and that ensures it doesn’t go bad. Good luck and I’ll definitely stay tuned that’s for sure .

Check out your local farmer’s market this Saturday morning. You will be Astonished how much you can save and wonder why you haven’t done it sooner. :)

Oh I can’t wait to see how this challenge goes. I’ve transitioned to a more organic, gluten free diet, and my grocery bill has increased quite a bit! Hoping to get some tips from your shopping!!

Mary – can you provide the website please…with my 2nd child due to arrive in the next month and a half i want to start cooking more organic esp since I will be home and include my 2 year old in it!

I made all his baby food organic and plan to do the same, unless i get some Free baby food jars for those occassional outings :)

I agree with the Costco recommandation. I have purchased large bags of organic rice and quinoa at a great price there, also pasta sauce, salad dressing. For produce, generally the regular grocery stores are much more expensive to buy from their organic section. If you try to go to an independant organic grocery store, I find the prices very comparable to regular produce, often even cheaper. Here in Montreal, there is a little organic produce vendor on Parc Avenue and they often have organic bananas for .39 or .49/lb, organic apples .99/lb, organic lettuce .99, etc. You just need to know where to go, and what to buy where.

    11. Mesenga says:

Is there any possible way you may be able to plant some fruits and veggies in your backyard as well? You’ll see their progress and know for sure that they’re organic. Also cheaper but I know this takes a bit longer.

Costco has many organic products – 2 large salsas for $7, 1.5 KG frozen organic blueberries $11, whole almonds (not sure if you can get organic nuts), NEW organic Home Goodness chicken broth (6 boxes $7.99), Larabars, and non-dairy beverages. Those are NL prices and probably much cheaper in ON. Also – check out http://www.nongmoproject.org/ – it’s a great site.

Beretta Farms delivers around the GTA and they have an awesome website! Good luck – I’m also moving towards more organic foods (I’m gluten free so it’s a little more challenging). Also keep in mind there are lots of articles out there about the best fruit and veggies to get organic and which “regular ones” are quite fine. For example ‘regular’ bananas and onions are often ok because they have thick skins.

    13. Dee says:

I have just started becoming more conscious of the toxins in our food and household products… So I am very interested in your experiment. Also interested to see how much frugality can be accomplished when we are buying safer/organic products… Good luck!

    14. Brooke says:

Mary… What company do you use? I tried one and it was awful!!

    15. Mary says:

We get an organic veggie/fruit basket delivered weekly. You have to be creative with the veggies but pretty cheap. We love it.
