    Wanigan: Organic Grocery Shopping Trip

Last week I tried shopping at organic grocery stores, so this week I wanted to experience organic grocery delivery.

After searching for hours one day, I could only find one place that delivered more than just produce (and didn’t want to charge me a fee to sign up) – Wanigan.

They had a great selection of various grocery items available for delivery, at prices that were similar (and sometimes less) to the prices I paid at the stores last week. The only thing they didn’t have, that I was disappointed about, was milk and meat.

    Here’s what I purchased:

    1x Broccoli @ $2.65
    1x Almonds 200g @ $4.58
    1x Hot House Tomato @ $1.48
    1x Blueberries 1/2 Pint @ $2.59
    1x Chick Peas @ $2.55
    1x Green Leaf Lettuce @ $2.25*
    1x Carrots 2lb @ $2.48
    1x Cumin 13g @ $2.83
    1x Thyme 5g @ $2.83
    1x Gala Apples 3lb @ $6.85
    6x Bananas @ $2.85*
    2x Dozen Eggs @ $5.99 each = $11.98*

    Total = $45.92 ($35.83 after credit – see below)

I received my delivery this morning:

I thought for sure it would come in a big sturdy box (I received organic produce delivery before and that’s what it came in), so was not very excited to see all of my food in a big bag.

They rang the doorbell, left the bag on my porch and took off before I even had a chance to get to the door.

Here is everything that was inside:

In case you’re wondering – yes, I’m missing a carton of eggs. They didn’t bring it. There were 2 other issues with my delivery:

    1. The lettuce was completely wilted and unusable.
    2. The bananas were very brown (a few were almost black!) and needed to be frozen or used immediately to prevent spoiling.

Annoyed at the poor quality of those items and the missing eggs, I called Wanigan to explain my issues.

One of the things I dislike about this company is that you can never get a hold of a real person. You always get an answering machine. Fortunately, they do seem to return your phone calls rather quickly.

The lady that I spoke to was very polite and told me she would apply a refund to my credit card for the bananas, lettuce and eggs, but I was surprised when she did not offer an apology of any kind.

Final thoughts: I will not order from Wanigan again. I did love their online selection, but was not at all satisfied with the quality of the food.

Well that just sucks the donkey’s balls! Sorry you had such a bad experience with Wanigans. My friends swore by their weekly delivery.

I still intend to check out their shop in Brampton and I’ll let you know if it’s decent.

personally I think the labelling of produce “organic” automatically means they charge a higher price. Going to local produce stands & farmers markets where the farmer actually grows the food & you can talk to them, I find that they don’t use pesticides & chemicals, but they haven’t put out the cost to be certified organic so they cannot claim organic, but their food still technically is. I’m in the Metro Vancouver area, so maybe it is a little different here than in Ontario. There are also farming co-ops out here that you can buy into and don’t have to farm yourself. The one I was looking into (unfortunately I was too late in the season to join for this year) you pay a lump sum up front & are guaranteed a weekly minimum amount of produce per week that you go to the farm to pick up. They had rave reveiws from last year & everyone said they got a much better value than they paid for & all good produce. Google ‘community farm sharing’ and if if any are close to you.

You have not had any luck with the organic venture!!!

this looks very disappointing…i go to grocerygateway.com here in cambridge, ontario
they deliver and have both organic and regular items….freshest ever and delivered to your door properly packaged and delivered inside your door from a real person and company with 5 star customer service….they dont take coupons but they provide there own 4 times a year and you get bonus email coupon savings…i think it is canada wide…myself i would have sent the whole thing to be picked back up and a full credit on my card.

Oh, that would be SO frustrating!

I can’t wait to see if you try conventional stores as one of your weekly options and how they compare.

    6. Sandra says:

      Sorry to hear your experience…

I think out west has a way better time with organic, they seem to have jumped on it and they get good stuff… Here on the eastern side there is not much selection and quality is poor…

    7. Tanya says:

Save On Foods has lots of organic produce and foods… have you tried them?

    8. Peeps says:

What a bummer!!! I guess I am lucky, we get a weekly bag from our local organic place for $30 and it does us for the whole week. Excellent quality and almost all local. Funny thing is we live in central B.C. where you would expect fresh good quality produce to cost us a fortune.

    9. tricia says:

We live in Alberta, and we get our organic food delivered from SPUD. I am not sure if they have them on the East coast but no harm in looking. Anyways, their produce is always fantastic.

Thanks for sharing! I used to work for an organic food delivery place as a customer service person, and we were told never to apologize as it would make the company look bad and I personally was reprimanded for saying sorry to someone because her eggs were packed on the bottom and arrived broken! Customers called frequently with complaints of missing, broken or spoiled products. The warehouse staff were paid minimum wage and put under a lot of stress to pack people’s orders as fast as possible. That being said, I personally recommend buying produce in-person so you get exactly what you want the first time around! Plus, it is much cheaper!

    11. Amanda Evans says:

Julia, your comment made me smile! I have often wondered about home delivery of produce, and your experience is exactly why! Thanks for sharing…. I think I will keep driving to my local store and get my produce as I don’t want to have a similar experience.

      Great Post as always!

      Amanda

sorry you had a bad experience. before i go to the farmers market i go to a place called Rachelle béry, here in montreal. I always check out their flyer online first. I only get what I can organically there. then the rest local from the farmers market. Your broccoli was so expensive! wow. last week was 99 cents for us for 3 huge stalks. I only buy what is on sale, and whats great about that place is that its 2 weeks the same flyer so you can really plan ahead. but again here in montreal.

I hope you find a better place that treats you better!

    13. Brooke says:

I had a horrible time with Wanigans… we got rotten veg and there was no help fixing the problem!! They just gave us a $6 credit on our account – that I told them to surprise someone else with because I would never use them again!!!!

    14. jessica says:

Im surprised that you had issues…i live right by wanigan and go in frequently…you save 15% going in and i like selecting my own produce. maybe try going to the store if ur not too far? its very small, but the people are very nice.

    15. Julia says:

Sorry to hear about your frustrating experience. I have similar issues with the quality I get when I send my hubby to pick out fruits and veggies. At least he’s always accessible to complain to – no answering service necessary
      ;)
