Why Everyone Should Use Coupons

The lovely Jamie from I Am A Money Magnet allowed me to do a guest post on her blog, so I wrote about what I love the most in life (after my family of course… and chocolate…) – COUPONS! Click here to read the post on Jamie’s site or look below to read it here (but please do check out her site – it is AWESOMENESS TO THE MAX!).

Simply put – coupons save you money. If you learn to use them the “right” way, they can actually save you ALOT of money. Spending just an hour every week to look for, clip and organize your coupons can save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars every year. Last year I saved over $13,000 using coupons. THIRTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS, PEOPLE! I still can’t believe it, myself. This was all possible because of coupons.

Using Coupons Is Too Much Work – NOT!
I cringe every time I hear this line. I mean, seriously, I saved all of that money last year and also worked. I did not sit on the computer all day, every day, trying to find deals and coupons. I spent a few hours a week researching good deals, ordering and clipping my coupons. I would spend about an hour once per week planning our weekly menu and my shopping trip. Another hour at the grocery store and that’s it. I’d say I average about 5 hours per week dealing with coupons. But you don’t have to spend that much time!

I use coupons on a massive scale because I donate and even sell some of my stuff, so I need to spend a bit more time with the deal hunting. If you just want to save even 50% off your monthly grocery bill, you really only need an hour or two (including the time to shop) to dedicate to coupons.

My favorite place to clip coupons is in front of the TV in the evenings. I find clipping to be SO BORING and just doing that in my office would probably drive me absolutely insane. By clipping coupons while I watch TV one night, it doesn’t bother me as much. The work gets done and I also get to enjoy some TV time.

Coupons Allow You To Try New Products On The Cheap
I have tried many new products since I’ve been couponing. These are things I would not normally have purchased, because I was content with what I was using then. However, when I receive a coupon for $1.00 off something that is on sale for $1.79, I think it’s worth it to give it a try. If I end up loving the product – awesome. If not, I can feel good knowing that I didn’t pay full price for it.

If there are products you want to try but can’t find good coupons for, I would suggest contacting the manufacturer directly. Simply tell them you would love to try their new product but find the store prices to be too expensive. Ask them if they can offer you any money saving coupons and a lot of the time, they will say yes! Don’t be discouraged if they don’t, though. Just email them another time and ask again. Maybe you will get a nicer representative that time.

Save Money On More Than Just Groceries
Coupons aren’t just for food and household items. You can also find many coupons for clothing, local services and restaurants. Always check online for any coupons that may be available to use at the store you are about to visit.

If you plan on shopping online, always search for “_____ discount codes” through your search engine to see if there are any promotional codes available to those stores. Many times, there are. It may take a few tries, but you can almost always find a coupon code online!

Coupons are my best friend. Is that sad? Either way, I save tons of money so neener neener!

*GIVEAWAY CLOSED*

The wonderful Beth Kobliner sent me two copies of her book Get A Financial Life (Personal Finance in Your 20′s and 30′s)!

I was so excited when these books showed up in my mailbox. I had been wanting to read her stuff for awhile now but can’t really afford to be buying new books and the library was always fresh out of the books I wanted to read.

This book is just full of so much useful information and it is very well written. I love books that have things bolded, underlined, highlighted and in bullet points. It just makes things so much easier to read.

I highly recommend this book. It’s not just good for beginners, but for novices as well.

Build An Emergency Fund You Can Be Proud Of

What would you do if you lost your job tomorrow? Would you have enough money in the bank to pay your bills while you search for new employment? Or would you have to start swiping your credit cards to pay for things like groceries and other household bills?

Building an emergency fund is one of the most important things you can do to prevent yourself from becoming in serious financial trouble. Emergencies do and WILL happen in your life and you need to be prepared for them. People often rely on credit cards for emergencies, but the problem with this approach is that those credit card bills don’t often get paid back right away, leaving you with interest payments on top of the actual bill. Wouldn’t you feel much better paying cash when an emergency arises and not having to worry about any interest costs?

There are many things your emergency fund could be used toward including:
- Loss Of Employment
- Death In The Family
- Major Car Repair
- Natural Distaster (flood, fire)
- Unexpected Dental Work
- Critical Home Repairs (roof, electrical)

How do I go about starting an emergency fund?
The first thing you need to figure out when you start building your emergency fund is where you want to put that money. It should be in a high-interest savings account that is easily accesible but not TOO easily accesible, if you know what I’m sayin’.

Richard and I have our emergency fund in an ING Direct Investment Savings Account (ISA), which has zero fees and gives us 1.50% in interest every year. Our emergency fund sits at a comfortable $15,000 (6 months worth of living expenses) so over the course of 1 year, we earn $225 in interest. That’s $225 in FREE money! After that first year, we we will have $15,225 and will make $228.38 in interest the next year. Awesome! (If you’re interested in setting up an ISA with ING Direct, please send me an email. I will send you a referral and we will both earn a $13 bonus! FREE MONEY, yes please!)

How much money should I have stashed away?
Honestly, this really depends on your personal situation. Are you single? Do you have kids? Pets? Do you live with roomates? This all factors in to how much money you should be saving.

I personally think that it’s best to have an emergency fund with 3-6 months worth of living expenses saved in case of an emergency. If your family lives on one income, I would suggest 6-12 months. You need to sit down and figure out how much your monthly expenses are (removing anything that is not absolutely necessary) – I would add a nice little buffer amount as well, just to be safe. So if your monthly living expenses are $3250, I would bump that up to $3300. When an emergency does come up, you’ll be happy to know you have that extra $50 every month for unexpencted expenses.

5 Ways To Start Building Your Emergency Fund – Easily!
1. Start Small – Start with an initial goal of $1,000 in the bank for emergencies. If you can’t afford to save much every month, that’s okay. The important thing is to save SOMETHING. Even a savings of $50 a month, will get you $600 by the end of the year, not including what you earn in interest. Once your financial situation starts to improve, you can save more every month. When you finally hit that $1,000 target, you can evalutate whether that amount makes you feel comfortable or if you should aim to save more.

2. Treat It Like Bill Pay – Have you ever heard the line “pay yourself first”? This is a good time to implement that advice. By treating your emergency fund savings amount as a monthly bill, you are more likely to put the money away instead of spending it.

3. Automate – Set up your online banking account to deduct a certain amount of money every month (or week, or whatever you prefer) and put it into your emergency fund. By doing this, you don’t even have to worry about transfering money – the bank will do the work for you!

4. Stash A Tax Refund or Bonus – If you’re fortunate enough to get bonuses at work, don’t blow all of it on WANTS. Put all (or most of) the money into your emergency fund. You will feel much better knowing that you have money set aside in case of emergency than you will by purchasing a new outfit or some random gadget. This same thing applies to tax refunds as well!

5. Sell Something Almost everyone has something in their home that they could do without. Whether it’s a toy your kids no longer play with, a guitar you have no desire to learn how to play or even a car that you don’t really NEED – sell it and put that money into your emergency fund.

How To Organize Your Shopping Trip

A few people have asked me how I get ready for my shopping trip every week. I thought it would be a great idea to share this information with you all – I hope you can learn something from it! I’m not saying that this is the BEST way to shop, this is just what I do – it’s what works well for me.

Scan The Store Flyers For Deals
The very first thing I do is look over all of the flyers for the stores in my area. I even check the flyers for stores I would probably never go into, because I can usually just price match their stuff at Walmart. I make a list of what great deals (or just items I need to buy) are at each store. Once I’m done doing this, I make a master shopping list. I almost always shop at least at Walmart because I can get my produce and other items here. If there’s alot that I can price match at Zellers, I will go there as well (just to use my SPC card and get 10% off) – and just get my produce and stuff at Walmart.

Divide Your Shopping List Into Stores & Categories
The next thing I do is make categories on my lists. Here’s an example of what my Walmart shopping list might look like:

PRODUCE:
2x broccoli @ .99
1x cauliflower @ .99
1x strawberries @ $1.49

HEALTH & BEAUTY:
4x st. ives facial scrub @ $1.00*
2x arm & hammer deodorant @ $1.49* (price match – food basics)

CONDIMENTS/SAUCES/ETC.:
5X kraft salad dressing @ $1.49 each*
2x kraft peanut butter 1kg @ $2.49 (price match – price chopper)

Since I go to this one particular Walmart location almost every week, I know the layout of the store pretty well. I make my list in the order of the stores layout to make things easier for me. I always start way at the back of the store where pet supplies and baby/kid supplies are, and make my way down to produce before I checkout.

Notice how I put a star beside some items? This is because I have coupons for them. This way, when I am loading my purchases onto the conveyor belt, I know which items I need to have coupons out for. You can also see that I clearly note which items I am price matching and what store the sale is at.

Pull All Coupons & Flyers You Plan To use
I always, always, always pull out all of the coupons I plan to use at the store before I even leave the house. I hate digging around in my coupon bag & binder while I’m in the store, so I avoid it whenever possible. I organize my coupons in order of the stores I plan on shopping at, usually with a paper clip.

I also get all of the flyers I plan to use to price match together. If possible, I like to fold the flyers in advance so that they are on the page where the sale items is, to make it easier for the cashier when I am showing them what I want to price match. This doesn’t really work if you plan on price matching many things from one flyer though.

I get my coupons, flyers and shopping list all together and then it’s time to hit the store(s)!

What You Should Bring With You To The Store:
- A nice, cold drink! I don’t know about you, but I get super thirsty when I’m deal hunting!
- Your coupon binder/folder/whatever. I always bring ALL of my coupons with me when I go out shopping. You never know when you will come across an unadvertised deal!
- The coupons & flyers you plan to use. Duh.
- Your shopping list. Another duh.
- A calculator.
- A snack or 10. Along with getting thirsty while I shop, I always seem to get hungry as well – even if I’ve already eaten before I left home. Avoid impulse buys by bringing a small snack for when the hunger bug bites.
- Reuseable bags.

I might also suggest bringing a print out of your stores coupon policy if you have one. I have had to show staff at Walmart their policy a few times to prove to the cashiers that they did in fact accept printable coupons. Ugh, annoying – but I’m glad I had that printout with me!

Buy Only What Is On Your List (Unless You Find Sweet Clearance Deals!) – And Get Out Of The Store
When you’re at the store, it can be very tempting to buy new products that you see and would love to try. DON’T DO IT! If you really want to try a certain product and it’s not on your list, make sure it’s on your list next week. :) Walk through the store and collect the items you plan to purchase. When you are done your shopping, pull over to a section in the store that is not busy and get your coupons ready to go. It’s a bad idea to get to the cash, pile all of your stuff on the belt and then have to dig around in your bag for the coupons, while the people behind you in line are huffing and puffing. Make sure all coupons are neat and in order. Some people like to put their coupons on the items they are using them on and some people like to give them to the cashier at the very end (HI!). Whichever way you chose to do it, make sure the coupons are in a nice pile for the cashier.

Watch The Screen
As items are being scanned, make sure they are all coming up at the correct price. If not, mention it to the cashier and ask if they will apply the SCOP discount on the item. Also keep a careful eye on the screen when your coupons are put through. Sometimes two coupons can stick together and a cashier can miss one. Othertimes the cashier is going too fast and can put in a $2.00 coupon as .20 – pay close attention! You didn’t do all that planning to not get the deal you should be getting.

Enjoy Your Shopping Sucess!
Skip out of the store happily, knowing that you only bought things that were on your list and that you got some pretty awesome deals. Pat yourself on the back when no one is looking. You don’t want to come off looking like a weirdo!

How To Build A Grocery Stockpile

Have you been thinking about starting a grocery stockpile to save money? It’s really not that hard to do – promise! It does take time time, but in the end I think it is very much worth it. Here are some tips to get you started:

Get Organized
Before you start building your stockpile you need to determine some very important things:
- Where are you going to store everything?
- What types of items are you looking to stockpile?
- How long would you like your stockpile to last? 3 month supply? 6 months? 1 year?
- How many of each particular item do you need to stockpile for your family to last you the amount of time you want?

How Much Should I Stockpile For My Family?
It’s impotant to become familiar with what items your family uses on a daily basis. Many families go through lots of cereal, soup, pasta, tomato sauce, shampoo, toothpaste, bathroom tissue, etc. A good idea is when you open a new item, mark the date on the bottom (or for a roll of TP, mark the date on the inside of the brown tube) – when the item is gone, note the date and determine how long it took your family to go through it. Let’s say you mark a box of cereal on August 12th and on August 19th it is all gone. It took your family 1 week to go through that box of cereal. If you want to have a 3 month supply of that cereal, you will need to stockpile 12 boxes. Make sense?

Pay Attention To Expiration Dates
Be careful not to overbuy for your stockpile, or items could quickly become expired and thrown into the trash – which is not helping you to save money whatsoever! Always put new items BEHIND current ones to ensure you are always consuming the older items before the new ones. I would also suggest going through your stockpile every six months and noting the expiration dates on items you have not been using much. If there are more than enough for your family and you think you may not be able to use them all before they expire, consider donating them to your local food bank or shelter. It’s better that someone use them, instead of throwing them into the garbage because you couldn’t get to them in time!

Figure Out What You Can Spend
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when starting to build your stockpile is to buy too much too fast. It can become rather tempting to have a huge stockpile full of items right away, but it is extremely costly to try this approach. It takes time to build a stockpile. It took me well over a year to get my stockpile to a place where I felt comfortable.

You need to figure out how much money you can afford to spend on “stock up items” every week. How much do you spend on groceries every week right now? Let’s say it’s $200. Of that $200, try to use $20 to use only for stock up items. If you don’t use it (or all of it) one week, carry it over to the next week. When you see a great sale on something that your family uses alot of and you want to stock up on, buy as many as you can use before they expire and that you can afford. Try not to use the entire $20 per week on 1 item. If salad dressing is on sale for $1.99, regular $3.99 and toothpaste is on sale for .88 regular $1.79, try buying a bunch of both items. Don’t fall into the trap of over buying! Only buy enough that your family can consume before the expiry date.

There are so many benefits to stockpiling.
- You will never run out of the things you use (well, sometimes you will – but if you stock up long enough, it’s not often that you will run out of something).
- You don’t have to live paycheck to paycheck when it comes to your groceries. If you’re short on cash one week, come up with an EAT FROM THE PANTRY menu and only use items that you have at home, stockpiled in your pantry/freezer/fridge.
- You will be able to prepare meals on the fly. Even if you fail to plan a weekly menu, your pantry will be filled with so many meal options that you won’t have an excuse to not prepare a meal.
- You can help out others in need. Think of all the less fortunate people in the world and imagine how happy they would be to receive some items from your stockpile. It feels so good to give!

Where should you store your stockpile?
Even if you live in a small place, you can still have a stockpile! Check out my recent post on stockpile storage ideas to get some ideas on how you can store your items.

Having a stockpile is a great way to save money. By making sure you only buy what you can afford and store, and by paying attention to expiration dates – you can do it! Start a stockpile. Join the club.

Freeganism – Dumpster Diving For Dinner

Have you ever considered getting your dinner from the dumpster? Did you know you can find TONS of fresh produce, breads and more from inside those big huge bins? You can – and alot of people do! These people are called freegans.

Freegans are a large group of people who salvage food and other goods from the trash.

Most of the food that is found is still in the original packaging. Things like bagels, muffins, cookies, cereal, crackers, cheese and even meat. Most of it is either just slightly past the sell-by date or nearing the sell-by date. Things like cartons of eggs are thrown away just because one the eggs in a carton is broken, even though there are 11 other good other eggs inside. Fruit and vegetables are often thrown away because they have small dents. Supermarkets throw away this perfectly edible food mainly for cosmetic reasons, which is a shame.

I do have some concerns about safety while dumpster diving and if it is even legal (I’m sure in some circumstances it isn’t).

I’ve been watching some videos and reading articles about this topic over the last few days and am absolutely shocked at how much perfectly good food is thrown away. In one video someone found 8 packages of corn on the cob that was bright yellow, perfectly fine! I would totally eat that. This same person also found an entire crate full of perfectly good fresh parsley. OMG!

I’m starting to re-think whether or not I would actually dumpster dive for food. FOR REALS!

Freegans don’t only go ‘shopping’ for food, they also find things like office supplies, furniture, clothing and books – all in excellent condition. It’s amazing what people will throw in the trash.

Are you a freegan or would you ever consider being one?
