3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #16

Spring cleaning is in full swing and since I’ve been resting for 6 weeks, taking care of a newborn, this house has gotten a bit out of control. I’m very eager to get it clean and organized for the summer!

I plan on tackling 1 spring cleaning task every day (except Sundays), for 3 weeks. They will be kitchen tasks, bedroom tasks and around the house tasks.

I hope you’ll join me in this process!

    Here is Task #16:

Wash all of your pillows and heavy bedding.

Wash all of your pillows and heavy bedding and pack away the heavy stuff, bringing out your light bedding in it’s place.

I throw our pillows in the washing machine and let them air dry (sometimes I throw them in the dryer if I’m in a hurry).

Also, vacuum your mattress to get rid of any bed bugs!

Come back later tonight for an update on my progress with this task.

Please share your progress in the comments!

Actually vacuuming your mattress will only make the dust mites airborne, which is worse to breath in. I am allergic to dust mites and the only thing that works is the mattress barrier and pillow covers. I was told when I did my allergy test to NEVER vacuume your mattress.

Indeed dust mites…bed bugs are a whole ‘nuther issue! It was a tenuous 2 year wait for us when ds was bitten on vacation, only noticing it late the night we got home…thankfully none hitched a ride home with us but given we all had just gotten new mattresses and one room had new carpeting…yuck!

I don’t vacuum my mattress too often but I do wash the mattress pad with the sheets every week as I have a dust allergy. Thus, pillows and blankets don’t go too long without a wash around here either.

    3. marisa says:

I think she meant to say dust mites! Dust mites are everywhere and are a big cause of allergies.
They eat dead skin off the mattress and bedding so a good vacuuming once a month is a great way to reduce them.
Also a quick steam with your hand steamer if you have one- cuts down on dust mites and allergens :)

    4. Elizabeth says:

A vacuum would help to remove dust, but If a person has bedbugs in their home, the problem is WAY more than a vacuum will solve. They can take months and thousands of dollars to get rid of, and can live up to a year and a half without a blood meal.
