  • Wedding Decor That is Fun & Frugal

    Frugal Wedding Decor.

    Wedding Decor

What’s the second most important part of a wedding? First, it’s the food. What’s next?

Wedding decor. And because wedding decor is so important, it’s often very expensive. Thankfully, this is one area of your wedding budget that is easy to cut back on.

You can still have a beautiful wedding without spending a fortune to get it. Here’s how:

    Borrow everything possible

This one is a given. Try to borrow as many wedding decorations as you possibly can. Ask friends, family, neighbours – there are even some nice people on Freecycle that will actually lend you items.

Ask to borrow flower vases, candles, table linens, picture frames, lighting, fabric for hanging, glass jars, signs, buckets, silk flowers, candle holders, and anything else that you need.

Most people that have been married will be happy to help you out and lend you some wedding decor pieces, because they know from experience just how expensive a wedding can be.

Remember to return all borrowed items promptly after the wedding.

    Purchase items second hand

For everything that you are unable to borrow, your next task should be to try and purchase them second hand. Check out thrift stores, yard sales, flea markets, online classifieds (such as Craigslist and Kijiji), in the newspaper, and seek out everything you need.

Of course, you may not find everything that you are looking for, but even if you can pick up a few things at a second hand price, as opposed to full price, you are certain to save some money.

Remember that when you are shopping second hand, you can always negotiate prices. Yes, even at thrift stores. Start with a low number and see if the seller will accept. Most times, they will, because they want to sell. If not, ask for the best price they can do and offer just a bit below that (if they ask $20, you offer $18) and they will likely accept it.

    Check out the dollar store

You also want to check out your local dollar store for cheap wedding decor. You are probably not going to be able to find larger items there, but you can certainly pick up cheap flower vases, candles and candle holders, glass jars, buckets, and picture frames.

The dollar store is also a great place to purchase craft supplies. Use those craft supplies to make your own wedding decor! Pick up large letters (your first initial, your future husband’s, and the first initial of your NEW last name) and paint them. These make great decor pieces.

Other wedding decorations you can make from dollar store supplies would be table numbers, money box, cake stand, and table decorations (candles in candle holders with ribbon tied around them, glass jars with shiny beads inside).

A few of my favourite cheap wedding decor items:

    Mason Jars

The best thing about mason jars is that they are incredibly versatile. You can use them as drinking glasses, flower vases, candle holders, to store food, as storage for small items and even just as decorations on their own (especially if you paint them, or purchase coloured mason jars).

    Flower Petals

If you really want to have real flowers at your wedding, one of the best ways to cut costs on them is to purchase flower petals instead of (or in addition to) full flowers.

Flower petals spruce up a wedding real fast and they are not that expensive. Sprinkle them down the aisle, on the tables and you can even put them in jars with candles on top (LED light candles, of course).

They make a big statement for little cash.

    Balloons

I know that many people think balloons are tacky at a wedding, but I don’t. Done right, they can actually be very pretty and work very well as wedding decor. Balloons ad pops of colour and whimsy to a wedding, and are, of course, extremely inexpensive. Especially compared to more “traditional” wedding decorations.

They key is to keep it fun, but also sophisticated. It’s possible! Check out these great ideas for balloons at a wedding:

    Nature

If you’re having an outdoor wedding, nature is going to be your best friend. Take advantage of everything around you. Trees, plants, flowers, a lake, a sunset.

Put twigs and a single flower in glass jars. Pick flowers (if possible – get permission if necessary) and use them as bouquets, in vases, and to decorate the tables and chairs. Use pine cones as place settings.

Even just having your wedding at a location with a ton of greenery is beautiful.

    String Lights

Using string lights as lighting for your wedding is a simple, inexpensive way to add some sparkle. You can hang these in trees if you’re having an outdoor wedding, and they also work well hung on walls or up near the ceiling.

Want a more romantic look? Try using a transparent fabric in front of the lights. This will help to diffuse the light a bit (and will also work to hide the cords!).

    Wooden Signs

You don’t have to be crafty to make these signs for your wedding! Take a piece (or two, or three) of scrap wood and paint some words on it/them. Your wedding date would be nice, too. Stick them where your guests will see them and watch them ooh and ahh over your easy and very inexpensive wedding decor.

You can use these signs on tables, on walls, on trees – you can even put a stake into them and stick them in the ground near your ceremony or reception site.

Wooden signs are extremely easy to make and cost next to nothing. Plus, they are very rustic and add a lot of charm to any wedding.

    Picture Frames

What can’t you do with a picture frame? The best place to purchase frames is from thrift stores and dollar stores. You can always find a wide assortment of different shapes, sizes, styles and colours at both of these stores and they will cost you a fraction of what they cost anywhere else.

You can use picture frames for so many different things in your wedding. Use them as decor on tables and walls, as table numbers, to create funny photos with your guests, to display the menu, and to hold place card settings. Even empty photo frames look nice when displayed right!

There you have it – wedding decor that is fun and frugal. As you can see, you can spend an arm & a leg on decor items for your wedding – or, you can be a bit creative and spend less on decor pieces that are just as nice as the expensive stuff, but cost much less.

The most important thing is to be different. Think outside the box. What wedding decor pieces do you want, but cost too much? How can you incorporate a cheaper version of those items into your wedding?

What are some of your favourite frugal wedding decor items?

  • How to Get Married Without Going Broke

    Wedding on a Budget.

    Get Married Without Going Broke

Did you know that the average wedding in 2012 cost $30,000? You read that right – thirty thousand dollars. I got married almost 5 years ago for a grand total of $5,000 (including a 1-week vacation to Cuba). This is not as good as my friend Kerry’s $239 wedding, but I still think we did pretty well, considering what the average wedding cost.

One thing my husband and I decided before the wedding was that we would pay cash for everything. We would not go into debt to get married. We paid for the wedding (and honeymoon!) by ourselves and and did not go a single cent into debt to get married – which we are so proud of ourselves for.

If you’re looking for ways to save money on your upcoming wedding, please, let me teach you how to get married without going broke.

    The Date

    • Don’t get married on a Saturday. It’s the most expensive day of the week.
    • Get married during the off-season (November – April is cheapest).

    The Invites

    • Make your own invitations. Instead of including an RSVP card, ask guests to RSVP by phone or email.
    • Don’t invite every single person you know. Cut your guest list back as much as possible – only invite those that are closest to you.

    The Location

    • Have a backyard wedding. It’s cheaper, less formal, and more familiar.
    • Have the ceremony and reception at the same place to save money (and time) on travelling.

    The Dress

    Wedding Dress

    • Buy used. Most dresses have only been worn once and with some dry-cleaning and alterations (if necessary), you can save a bundle.
    • Rent your wedding dress. It’s not like you’re going to wear it again, anyway.
    • Shop sample sales for a wedding dress. These dresses are only used in the stores as samples and will cost much less than brand new.

    The Decor

    • Shop Ebay, Craigslist, Kijiji, consignment shops and yard sales. Buy used wedding decor whenever possible.
    • Borrow decor items from your friends and family.
    • Use something other than flowers in centerpieces. Flowers are expensive.
    • If you must buy flowers, make sure to only buy flowers that are in season.

    The Food

    Wedding Snacks

    • Have a buffet dinner instead of serving multiple courses by the plate.
    • Have your ceremony in the morning and serve lunch afterwards, instead of dinner.
    • Have cupcakes instead of a wedding cake. They are cheaper to have made (make them yourself to save even more money).
    • Skip the champagne toast. Rarely does anyone drink the champagne.
    • Buy your own booze (if your venue allows it, or you are having a backyard wedding). Return the bottles to get cash back.

    The Photographer

    • Hire a student photographer that has a good portfolio. Check references.
    • Book your photographer early. Many offer discounts for booking in advance.

    The Entertainment

    • Hire a DJ instead of a band. They are much cheaper. Plus, you only have to feed one person, as opposed to a group.
    • If you must hire a band, hire students. Oftentimes, they are very talented and will cost you much less than an established group.

Please don’t spend $30,000 on a wedding. You don’t have to. There are a ton of ways that you can get married without spending copious amounts of money – and you can have an enjoyable, memorable (in a good way!) wedding to talk about for years.

Please share your money saving tips for weddings in the comments!

  • How to Garden the Frugal Way

    Frugal Gardening.

    How to Garden

Frugal gardening is something I have been talking about with family a lot lately, because I have been considering creating a garden in our backyard. Many of them think it can’t be done. “Gardening is expensive, there is no way to save any money”, says my grandma. “If you buy cheap plants, your garden will be ugly”, says my cousin.

I checked with my good friend (who has the most beautiful garden I’ve ever seen!), and she begs to differ. She is very frugal and tells me there are many ways to save money on gardening. With her help, I have compiled this list of 7 ways that you can garden the frugal way.

    Start with small plants

Plants are priced by the size, so to minimize gardening costs, start with smaller plants (until you get the hang of things and feel comfortable spending a bit more money).

    Start plants from seed

You can save an incredible amount of money by growing plants yourself, instead of purchasing them directly from a nursery or home improvement store.

    Buy in bulk

Buying in bulk will always save you money when it comes to plants for your garden, but doing so will likely leave you with excess. To save by purchasing in bulk, get a bunch of friends in on the purchase. This way, you all save!

    Host a plant swap

Just like buying in bulk is a great thing to do with some friends, so is hosting a plant swap. Each year, go through your garden and trade some plants with your friends. This adds variety to your garden and also creates fun memories.

    Plant Swap

    Make your own fertilizer

Creating your own fertilizer is a great way to save money on gardening and thankfully, it’s very easy to do (and it’s much more natural than commercial fertilizer). Here is a great tutorial: DIY fertilizer from kitchen leftovers.

    Buy cheap gardening items

If you can get your hands on some used (but still in good shape) gardening tools – do it! There’s no need to go brand new. If they are of good quality, gardening tools will last a very long time. Also consider re-using items you already have for gardening tools – start seeds in egg cartons, make a watering can from a milk jug, etc.

    Collect water

Instead of using your own water and racking up your water bill, use a rain barrel to collect rain water. Use that to water your garden instead. You can buy rain barrels at most nurseries and home improvement stores, but they are also pretty easy to make yourself. Here is a rain barrel tutorial for you.

    DIY Rain Barrel

Gardening is such a fun part of spring and summer, but it is not often very cheap – unless you are smart about it. By following just a few of these gardening tips, you will be able to enjoy your garden, without spending a ton of cash on it.

  • Price Matching for Beginners

    Beginner Price Matching.

    Price Matching for Beginners

I have only been price matching for a year, and I still cannot believe how simple it is and how much money I save through this process.

When I talk about how great price matching is, I often get a glazed look or a polite dismissal.

Here are the main concerns I hear:

    • It sounds too complicated (it’s not)
    • I don’t have the time (it can actually save you time)
    • It won’t make a big difference in my bill (it will)

Price matching allows you to reduce your grocery bill by buying the best deals from several stores in just one stop – and it’s easy. I swear. Ready?

Here are 5 simple steps to begin price matching.

    Step 1

Decide to try price matching just one time.

    Step 2

Check out the list of Canadian stores that price match and pick your favourite price matching store. Note: Some stores like FreshCo only let you price match a limited amount of the same items.

    Step 3

Gather three (only 3) grocery flyers that offer great deals. My personal favourites are Food Basics, No Frills, FreshCo, and Walmart. Scoop up whichever flyers are best in your region.

    Price Match in Canada

    credit

    Step 4

Select four (or less) great deals from each flyer. Circle these items so the cashier can spot them quickly. Best deals are usually featured on the front page or the back pages. When you make your regular grocery shopping list, note which stores have your sale items.

    Example shopping list:

    • Milk
    • Eggs
    • Cheese (Black Diamond 500g – Food Basics $3.88)
    • Bread (Country Harvest – FreshCo $1.97)
    • Apples (Royal Gala – No Frills $0.88/lb)
    • Jam

If you are not too sure what are “great prices”, let us do the work for you. Every Thursday, we share our coupon match-ups – which are the best deals from each flyer. It couldn’t be easier!

    Step 5

Off to the store! Place reusable bags in your cart. Hang 1 flyer over each bag. As you shop, put the sale items in the bag with the proper flyer. This makes for an easy checkout. Pass the whole bag to the cashier, and she will enter the price matched prices. Any items that are not being price matched can be put loosely in your cart.

    Price Matching Bags

And that’s it! Even without using coupons you can save a significant amount of money by price matching.

Here are the 4 deals I chose from the 3 flyers above (to price match at Real Canadian Superstore):

    Food Basics Flyer
    Black Diamond Cheese (500 g) $3.88 x 5 bars = $10
    Seedless Grapes $0.88 cents/lb = $2
    Cauliflower $1.97 = $1
    Broccoli $0.99 x 2 = $2

    Freshco Flyer
    Tostitos $1.77 x 3 = $6
    Chapman’s Premium Ice Cream $1.97 x 4 = $8
    Jane’s Frozen Chicken Strips $4.97 x 3 = $15
    Strawberries $1.44 x 3 = $4.50

    No Frills Flyer
    Ragu Spaghetti Sauce $0.99 x 5 = $5
    Astro Yogurt 12 cups $2.97 x 2 = $6
    Royal Gala apples $0.97/lb = $3
    Cantalopes $1.27 x 2 = $2.50

By purchasing items we needed, using 3 flyers, with 4 items per flyer, I saved almost $45 – and that is without using coupons!

Trust me, once you try just price matching alone, the thrill of the deal will make you want to keep going. You will feel badly for those around you paying full price.

    Time Spent vs Money Saved

    • Listing price matching items on your grocery list = 10 minutes
    • Circling sale items in flyers = 5 minutes
    • Putting items in right bags in your cart = 0 minutes
    • Giving bags to cashier to enter different prices = 5 minutes

Where else can you save $45 with 20 minutes of work? Even if you saved $20 each trip with price matching, wouldn’t that be worth it?

The first time you do this, you might spend a bit of extra time, but you will quickly become more efficient and it will take no time at all to price match groceries.

    An added benefit

Finding coupons for fresh items is tricky, but you can price match each store’s best deal on produce. I regularly save between 25-50% on my produce this way.

So, price matching rookies – willing to give it a try this week? We’d love to hear from you!

Price matching professionals – what are your best tips for beginners?

  • Garage Sale Tips for Saving Money & Time

    Garage Sale Tips.

    Garage Sale Tips

I have been an avid garage sale shopper for over ten years. My husband still marvels that I have trouble waking up every morning except Saturdays during garage sale season. What can I say? I love a great deal!

Now that the warm weather is here, I am counting the days until my first yard sale of the year. Here are a few tips I have learned to make the most of this unique shopping season.

    In Advance

Make a needs list and a wish list

Make a list (as a family) of items that are necessities (you need to buy them within the next year) and items that would be treats. Get the kids involved in this process.

We just compiled our list and it includes hockey skates, baseball gloves, clothes for boy #1 to grow into, athletic pants for boy #2, shorts for boy #3 and a life jacket for the baby. Our household list includes a bookshelf and a lamp table.

    Ask around

If you have babies or toddlers, ask other parents what items they recommend for the next stage in your child’s life. Even though your 18 month old might chew on puzzles now, they will be able to do simple puzzles within a year. Better to buy them reduced, than to pay full price when it’s not garage sale season.

Remember, kids reach so many milestones within the first few years, and their interests are often changing frequently.

    The night before

    Plan your route

Friday nights are planning time for me. Check out Kijiji, Craigslist and local online sites for yard sales. I plan my route around street sales, complex and multi-family sales to maximize my time. You will get to know communities that have annual sales, and can watch diligently for those ones.

    Yard Sale Route

    credit
Usually, people who take the time to post about their garage sales will have larger quantities to sell.

    Get the car ready

I keep a few shopping baskets and bags in the trunk so I can easily transport my treasures at the end of the day. Don’t forget to go to the gas station if necessary. You don’t want to worry about having to stop for gas in the middle of yard sale shopping!

    Pack a snack & drinks

Time is precious if you are trying to get to a lot of yard sales. Not having to stop for snacks and drinks saves you both time and money.

    The day of

    What to wear:

    • A hat. How many times have I burnt my scalp when shopping outside for hours? Too many.
    • A fanny pouch for your lists and loose change – no large bills. It’s hard to offer someone a lower price of $1 and then pull out a $20 bill.

    What to bring:

    • Tape measure (to measure furniture)
    • Duffel bag for smaller purchases
    • Batteries to test items

Keep referring back to your list. Buy only what you know you will use, or you will be offsetting your savings. If you are pondering an item, carry it around with you so no one else scoops it up while you think.

Use garage sales as a teaching tool

When my boys were little, they received coins for doing extra jobs. We stored their money in magnetic tins on the fridge. Each tin was labeled with their names and they toted them proudly to yard sales.

    Yard Sale with Kids

For efficiency, I do love to shop alone. But – many times I bring my boys so they can spend their coins and learning lasting lessons through this experience, such as:

    • When your money is gone, it’s gone. You then have to window shop for the rest of the day.
    • Paying full retail prices is not wise.
    • Negotiating can be fun (and effective when you are 3).
    • Toys you feel desperate to get today, you will outgrow or tire of sooner than you think.

Making memories with my kids in this way, and helping them learn life lessons, reminds me that it is worth slowing my pace to let them come along.

What are your best garage sale deals?

  • How Do I Save Money When My Partner Doesn’t Want To?

Partner Doesn’t Want to Save Money.

    MoneyTroubles

Did you know that the number one reason for divorce is money troubles? That’s what my friend Gail says, and my research tells me that she’s right.

Getting your partner on board with your finances is not always the easiest thing to do, but it is absolutely necessary if you want to have a long, happy marriage.

If you’re finding it difficult to talk to your partner about money, and you feel that they are not on board with your plan to save money, it’s time to get things ironed out – and this means talking about the problem.

Here are a few tips for getting your partner on board with saving money.

Explain why this is important to you

Everyone knows that it’s important to save money, but some are more apt to “live in the moment”, instead. If this is your spouse, explain to them why saving money now is important to you.

Maybe you want to retire early, travel the world or move to a new home. Whatever the reason, make sure you communicate with your spouse why you want to save money. I’m sure you don’t want to save money just for the fact of saving money – you have a reason. Let them know what that reason is.

    Don’t nag – ever

Nagging rarely ever works. Don’t spend any time nagging your spouse about money. This often leads to resentment and resentment is never good in any relationship. So don’t nag.

Instead, have a talk with your spouse about money and explain your feelings about how things have been going lately. If you’re unhappy about something, tell them, but don’t nag them about it. Don’t point fingers. Explain the problem, and then work on a solution together.

Come up with a plan together

What are your goals in life? What are your partner’s goals? Do you want to travel? Buy expensive cars? Live in a fancy home? Start your own company? Or maybe you just want to retire comfortably, without worrying about whether or not you’ll have enough money to make it until the end of the month.

Whatever your goals are, come up with a plan to reach those goals. Make sure that both you and your spouse are respectful to each others’ dreams and ambitions. Help each other reach their goals by getting a plan in place to make them happen.

    Goals List

    Make saving automatic

When it comes to saving money, there are 3 types of savers. Those that save every last cent that they possibly can, those that save whatever is left over after paying bills (which is usually nothing – or not very much), and those that save a pre-determined amount of money every month.

Go for person #3. To make saving money easy, it needs to be automatic. Once you have decided on your goals, determine how much those goals will cost you and how long you have to save the money. Start putting aside money right away. The sooner you save, the sooner you reach your goals.

    Forgive mistakes

Your spouse has likely made some money mistakes and you have likely made some, too. Instead of constantly thinking about those mistakes, forgive yourself and forgive your partner. Move on. Spend your energy on the positive things in your life.

Once you’ve set goals and made a savings plan, you are on your way to a better financial future. Don’t dwell on mistakes that were made in the past. It’s time to move forward.

Don’t let financial troubles destroy your relationship with your partner. Have regular talks about money, goals and all of your dreams in life.

You can easily make those dreams a reality with lots of hard work, determination and a partner that is on board with the plan.

  • Menu Planning for One – How to do it Right

How to Meal Plan for One.

    Menu Planning for One

Ahh, menu planning. When I first moved out on my own I loved the thought that I could eat whatever I wanted for dinner. Not in the sense that I could eat junk food every night, but in having the luxury of not having to worry about what anyone else wanted to eat.

The novelty wore off fast and instead I was constantly asking myself “what should I have for dinner?”. I never knew what to make and needed to get better organized.

So here are some tips that helped me with my menu planning for one:

    Make a plan

Just because you are only cooking for one person does not mean you don’t need a menu plan. Planning your meals for the week will keep you from wondering “what should I make for dinner?” and will save you time and money by not wasting the food you have on hand or stopping for fast food.

    Cook easy meals

One pot or pan meals with minimal ingredients involve little prep time and are easy to prepare. If you really enjoy cooking and want to make more elaborate meals, save them for a night when you’re not just cooking for yourself. Invite guests and make the meal worth the extra effort.

    Pasta for One

    Make a little extra

Having a menu plan is important, but on nights where you are busy or just plain tired, it can be hard to stick to that plan. Make those nights easier by cooking larger batches of certain meals and freezing the extra to heat up later.

    Prep ahead of time

Make your week easier by having a food prep day. Taking a few hours one afternoon to chop fruits and vegetables, make snacks and side dishes will make it much easier to stick to your menu plan during the week.

    Chicken Recipes

    Look for resources

If you’re having trouble thinking of meal ideas or recipes for one, check out cookbooks such as Cooking for One. And you can always find great ideas on Pinterest.

Even cooking for one person takes time and effort every night, so not having to think about “what’s for dinner?” makes life much easier. Make menu planning part of your weekly routine to save yourself time and money.

Just because you’re only cooking for one, doesn’t mean you don’t need a plan!

How many people do you plan menus for?
