Spring Cleaning

  • Are you looking for a way to make your sink shine without much effort and without having to use special cleaners?

If your answer is yes, pay attention. This post is for you.

    Shine Stainless Steel Sink

There’s just something nice about a shiny stainless steel sink, and thankfully, it’s really easy to make it clean and shiny. No special cleaners needed. No chemicals. No weird combinations of various cleaning supplies. Just one thing:

    Baking Soda

That’s right, all you need for a shiny kitchen sink is a box of baking soda. And some water, of course.

Remove stuck on food and grease and then sprinkle a light amount of baking soda all over your sink, paying special attention to the corners and drain.

    Clean Kitchen Sink

Get out an old toothbrush (a sponge would work too, but I find that a soft toothbrush works best in the corners and drain, so I just use it for the whole sink), run it under water (in your sink with baking soda) for a few seconds and start scrubbing (lightly!) in circles.

    Cleaning With Toothbrush

Start with the sides of your sink, moving down, and finishing with the drain. Scrub the drain well, since that’s where most of your stains will likely be. If you need more water, run a bit in the sink and then shut it off. Don’t leave the water running, or all of your baking soda will disappear.

Here’s what my sink drain looked like before I added baking soda and started scrubbing:

    Dirty Drain

And here’s what it looked like when I was done:

    Clean Drain

Finish off your cleaning by rubbing a mixture of baking soda and water on the top of your sink, and on the faucet (use a rag or sponge for this). Wipe clean with a damp rag. Rinse out your sink so there is no baking soda residue. If you still see stains, add some more baking soda and scrub again.

Here’s what my sink looked like at the beginning:

    Dirty Sink

And here’s what it looked like when I was finished cleaning:

    Clean Sink

That’s it! A clean, shiny stainless steel sink in only 15-20 minutes, using only 1 very inexpensive product.

Now that’s my kind of project!

  • 3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #18

Spring cleaning is in full swing and since I’ve been resting for 6 weeks, taking care of a newborn, this house has gotten a bit out of control. I’m very eager to get it clean and organized for the summer!

I plan on tackling 1 spring cleaning task every day (except Sundays), for 3 weeks. They will be kitchen tasks, bedroom tasks and around the house tasks.

I hope you’ll join me in this process!

    Here is Task #18:

Wash all of your window treatments.

Wash all of your curtains and wipe down any blinds you have.

Replace your heavy window treatments with lighter ones, if necessary.

Come back later tonight for an update on my progress with this task.

  • I have been looking forward to today’s task all week!

There have been quite a few times when we’ve been out and needed something that we didn’t have with us in our van, so I wanted to fix that.

No before photos, because somehow, our van was actually pretty clean. It just needed a quick vacuum and some more organization.

We used to have 2 small reusable bags that held some extra diapers, wipes and emergency items, but we now have this fantastic bin:

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #17 Update

    Inside we have the following:
    - 2 Towels (For big messes – usually made by our dog!)
    - Blanket
    - First Aid Kit
    - Extra Swaddling Blanket
    - Extra Clothes for the Kids
    - 1 Bag of Emergency Gear
    - 1 Bag of Toddler Entertainment, Water, Diapers & Wipes
    - 1 Bin with Odds & Ends

This is what is in the wipes container:
    - Hand Sanitizer
    - Baby Powder
    - Extra Grocery Bags (For dirty diapers or clothing)
    - Toilet Seat Covers & Bathroom Tissue (You never know when you might need these!)
    - Small Bag of Snacks

Here is what you can find inside the 2 small bags:

The bin sits nicely in the back of our van. I keep my reusable bags in a large bag and it hangs on a hook. Any time I keep them on the floor they fall out, so I like to hang them.

Our centre console just holds facial tissue (and some napkins underneath).

The only thing in our glove compartment is our car manual. I want to put an umbrella in there as well, but I couldn’t seem to find one today.

I also keep a few books for Elliott in the back pocket of one of the seats. These help to keep him occupied on longer road trips.

Oh, and just for fun, here’s me vacuuming the van before I organized it:

    Here is Task #17:

De-clutter, clean and organize your vehicle.

It’s time to get your vehicle ready for summer! Vehicles are an extension of our home, so they need to be cleaned as well.

Take everything out and get rid of whatever doesn’t need to be in there. Vacuum the floor and seats and wipe down the dashboard and other, easy to reach areas.

Then, put everything that belongs back inside in an organized fashion. Here is a great example of an organized vehicle.

  • I like to wash all of our pillows every spring to freshen them up, so that was my task for today.

We have 4 pillows on our bed and some extras for guests. Elliott has 2 pillows as well, but we wash them every few weeks, since they tend to get dirty faster.

I throw them, two at a time, into our washing machine on the “light wash” setting.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #16 Update

I usually air-dry our pillows after they have been washed, but sometimes I will throw them into the dryer for a little bit, if I am in a hurry.

I had plenty of time today, so I let them air-dry.

Our bedding is the same all year round (duvet with a cover), so I didn’t need to swap that out. I did pack away some of our heavier blankets (for guests) and replaced them with light ones, though. I keep them in our hall closet until we have company stay overnight.

  • I spent an hour cleaning out our kitchen cabinets this afternoon.

There were only a few that were really dirty.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #15 Update

    Spice/Baking Cupboard: Before

    Spice/Baking Cupboard: After

The cupboard above the stove holds our toaster and it was a horror show up there. Crumbs all over the place.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #15 Update

    Before

I wiped it clean with a wet rag and it was as good as new. I also cleaned out the toaster to help prevent future messes.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #15 Update

    After

Our main cupboards that hold all of our dishes were fairly clean, so I didn’t have to do any scrubbing once I took the dishes out. A simple wipe in each cupboard was all that was necessary.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #15 Update

We keep our oils and vinegars in a lower cabinet and wow, was it ever filthy. I blame the balsamic. That stuff makes one heck of a mess.

The other really dirty cupboard was the one under the sink. This is where we keep our garbage and recycling bins, so they get pretty messy (I clean them on a weekly basis).

    Under the Sink: Before

    Under the Sink: After

The rest of the cabinets weren’t cleaned because they didn’t need it.

The top of our refrigerator was a big mess as well. It was so dusty up there. I just wiped it clean and now it sparkles. Much, much better!

  • I really thought I would struggle a lot more with today’s task than I actually did.

I love books, but refuse to keep them if they will only be read once, so I often get rid of them.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #14 Update

I guess I must have done a purge of my books more recently than I remembered, because there weren’t too many to say goodbye to today.

My book shelf in the office was a mess, though.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #14 Update

I took all of the books down, dusted them and cleaned the shelves.

I only found 3 books to get rid of (I actually had a duplicate of Clutter Rehab, so 1 of those is gone now).

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #14 Update

Finally, I re-arranged the books on the shelf.

    Purge books, dust book shelves.

Go through all of your books and get rid of those you no longer have any use for. If you’re never going to read it again, let it go.

Dust all of your books and book shelves, as well. I also suggest switching up the way you store your books, to prevent wear. For example, if you usually stand them up, stack them instead. If you usually stack them, stand them up.
