Spring Cleaning

  • The weather was beautiful today, so Elliott and I cleaned the vents on the front porch this morning. It was so nice to clean outdoors – it didn’t seem like a chore.

It was actually fun because we were enjoying sunshine at the same time.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #13 Update

Most of our vents were relatively clean, but the ones in the bathrooms got a good cleaning anyway.

Our main floor washroom had the dirtiest vent because Elliott goes in there to wash his hands after each meal and I guess he drops crumbs when he’s walking.

This is the vent that was in our upstairs bathroom. I’m pretty sure it’s covered in baby powder from the time Elliott decided to dump it all over the floor.

    Before

I scrubbed all of the vents with an old toothbrush dipped in warm, soapy water, then rinsed them off.

I left them on the porch to dry while we ate lunch inside.

  • 3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #13

Spring cleaning is in full swing and since I’ve been resting for 6 weeks, taking care of a newborn, this house has gotten a bit out of control. I’m very eager to get it clean and organized for the summer!

I plan on tackling 1 spring cleaning task every day (except Sundays), for 3 weeks. They will be kitchen tasks, bedroom tasks and around the house tasks.

I hope you’ll join me in this process!

    Here is Task #13:

Clean all of the vents in your home.

Pull up all of your floor and wall vents and clean them well. Use an old toothbrush to get into any crevices that may be difficult to reach with a rag.

If you have any vents on your ceiling (we have them in our bathrooms), and you didn’t clean them when you cleaned your light fixtures, clean those as well.

Come back later tonight for an update on my progress with this task.

  • It’s amazing how much dust can accumulate on your light fixtures.

The last time I cleaned ours was probably before I was pregnant, so it’s been about a year… and you could definitely tell.

I took most of the lights down to clean them, but some weren’t that dirty, so I just wiped them off.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #12 Update

The light fixture in the kitchen was a nightmare. It was coated in grease and dead bugs – disgusting! If I’d known it was getting that dirty, I would have cleaned it sooner.

Elliott helped me clean some of the lights as well.

He refuses to wear pants lately. I don’t get it.

He thought it was fun cleaning the “light balls”. I’m glad I have a child who actually enjoys cleaning. For now, anyway. I’m sure this will change as he gets older!

Clean all of the light fixtures in your home.

If you can reach it – clean it! If possible, take them down to wipe clean. If you can’t take them down, wipe them off the best that you can.

Also, replace any light bulbs that need replacing.

  • I was really looking forward to purging my clothing today because I have so much of it.

I have maternity clothes, normal clothes and “in the middle” clothes. It’s a bit crazy.

I found a few things that were stained or ripped and those went into the trash (my husband found a few items as well).

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #11 Update

Here’s my pile of clothing to be donated – I can’t believe I had so much stuff in my dresser that I wasn’t even wearing.

I keep my pajamas in the top drawer:

Then my tank tops and t-shirts below:

My capris and pants are in the bottom drawer:

I also have one drawer in a separate dresser that holds clothing that is a bit small now, but I hope to fit into by the time of the half-marathon in November. If it doesn’t fit by then, it’s going to be donated as well.

    Here is Task #11:

Go through your clothing and get rid of things you no longer need.

Try on everything that you own and if it doesn’t fit, sell or donate it. If it’s stained, ripped or not your style anymore, let it go.

You only have to tackle your own clothing, but I suggest getting your family to join in and go through their clothing as well!

  • I have to be honest – I almost didn’t complete today’s task. If it weren’t for you all here to hold me accountable, I don’t think I would have even bothered.

Cleaning the baseboards has to be one of the most boring chores on the planet. Unfortunately for me, ours were pretty filthy, so they needed to be cleaned.

I just used a wash cloth with warm soapy water for most of the baseboards in our house.

The really bad areas, like by the front door, got a bit of a scrubbing with an old toothbrush.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #10 Update

This is how I use some of my FREE toothbrushes!

I’m so glad this task is done and I can forget about it for another year!

    Here is Task #10:

Wash the baseboards in the high traffic areas of your home.

Don’t bother cleaning the baseboards in areas you never see – just focus on those that are in plain sight. If you already washed your baseboards when you cleaned your walls, clean all the doorknobs in your home instead.

This is not a fun task, I know. I promise that tomorrow’s will be much more exciting!

  • If there’s one chore I put off because I really don’t like it, it’s washing the shower curtains.

I always have problems putting them back up after they’ve been washed. I must be the weakest person on the planet, because my arms start to ache halfway through getting them hung up!

I’d put this chore off too long though, so today I forced myself to get it done.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #9 UpdateI put our shower curtain liner in the washing machine with a towel. I’ve never had any issues with tears, so I always wash it this way.

I washed the liner on gentle cycle with some laundry detergent and that’s it. I let it hang dry in the shower.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #9 Update

I washed the actual shower curtain along with some other towels that needed to be cleaned and when that was done and the liner was dry, I hung it back up.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #9 Update

Finally! There’s another annoying task checked off my list.

    Here is Task #9:

Wash both your shower curtain and liner.

I’ve been meaning to wash our shower curtain and liner since before Kaylee was born. I’m glad to be able to get this task out of the way today!

We have a plastic shower curtain liner (I think I bought it for around $10 at Walmart) and I just throw it in the washing machine with a towel or two and then let it hang dry. The shower curtain itself gets washed separately with towels as well.
