Spring Cleaning

  • Today started out really well. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping. I was actually looking forward to cleaning the trash cans.

    That’s when life happened.

Elliott had a few accidents that I had to clean (we just started potty training), and then Kaylee was fussy for about an hour. Then it was lunch time.

The next thing I know it’s 12:30pm and I still hadn’t tackled the trash cans.

When Elliott went down for his nap half an hour later, I emptied all the bins and started to wash them.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #8 Update

I find it easiest to wash trash cans in the bathtub.

I set them out on the porch to dry, only to bring them in 5 minutes later due to a sudden thunderstorm that decided to stop by.

Because of all the rain, I couldn’t get to the outside trash can (I don’t like washing it in the garage), so it will have to wait until tomorrow.

At least the indoor trash cans are clean!

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #8 Update

A tip my mom gave me: keep an extra trash bag at the bottom of the bin so you have a replacement the next time you take out the trash.

  • 3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #8

Spring cleaning is in full swing and since I’ve been resting for 6 weeks, taking care of a newborn, this house has gotten a bit out of control. I’m very eager to get it clean and organized for the summer!

I plan on tackling 1 spring cleaning task every day (except Sundays), for 3 weeks. They will be kitchen tasks, bedroom tasks and around the house tasks.

I hope you’ll join me in this process!

    Here is Task #8:

Clean trash cans (both your indoor and outdoor cans).

It’s garbage night here, which means I am going to be cleaning all of the trash cans in our home.

I used to do this weekly, but found that it was too much work, since we have a trash can in almost every room. So now I do it every few months.

It’s actually been about 6 months since I did it last, yuck! This is something that really needs to be done. I’m glad it’s a nice sunny day so I can tackle this task outdoors.

Come back later tonight for an update on my progress with this task.

  • The weather was relatively nice today, so I was happy to open up all the windows and get them and the window frames nice and clean.

Elliott was a great helper. He LOVES washing windows (and walls, and tables.. pretty much anything he can wipe with a rag or paper towel).

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #7 Update

I’m always disgusted by the amount of filth that accumulates on the outside of our windows. So gross!

The window in our master bedroom was the hardest, but only because it is huge and very heavy (the one I take out to clean).

I’m happy to report that all of the windows in our home are now squeaky clean!

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #7 Update

We have a nice view of the side of our neighbour’s house!

Dusting for cobwebs was easy. We had a few big ones in the basement, but that was pretty much it, thankfully.

Cleaning our face plates was a simple job as well. I often clean these whenever I notice they look dirty, so they weren’t that bad today.

  • We have 13 doors in our home (not including the front and back doors), so today’s task was actually more work than I had anticipated.

Luckily the doors were really only dirty on the bottom and near the door knobs, since that’s where Elliott can reach.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #6 Update

I thought for sure that the bathroom doors would be the dirtiest, but surprisingly it was the office and bedroom doors that had the most grime on them.

I used just a warm wash cloth with a bit of soap to clean the doors and door frames, but some spots were especially dirty and required the help of a Mr. Clean magic eraser.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #6 Update

For those of you that did this along with me, did you make sure to clean the tops of your door frames? I found more dust than I’m willing to admit on ours. So glad they are clean now!

    Here is Task #6:

Clean all doors and door frames.

Wipe down all of the doors in the high traffic areas in your home. For most, this would be the bathroom and bedrooms.

Our bathroom doors are always grimy thanks to a certain little toddlers fingers!

  • I have thousands of photos, videos and business files on my computer and I fully expected today’s task to take me all day long.

Thankfully, when I sat down to purge and organize my files, I realized that I had been keeping things more organized than I thought. The entire task of purging and organizing only took me about an hour.

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #5 Update

It took another 20 minutes or so to back-up my files. I back them up in 3 ways:

    - 1 back-up is on my husband’s computer.
    - 1 back-up is burned to DVD.
    - 1 back-up is burned to DVD and stored at my mom’s house (in case our home burned down or something!).

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #5 Update

I am not a hoarder in the slightest, but photos are something I have a really hard time letting go of, so I always have tons of them. I do regularly look at them though, so I guess that’s better than just having them sit there and never viewed, right?

Purge, organize and back up your computer files.

This task is another that I’ve been putting off for awhile now. I have thousands of files on my computer and the longer I wait to purge, organize and back them up, the longer it takes me to do.

I’m expecting that this will take me at least 2 hours today. Good thing it’s Saturday and Richard is here to help with the kids!

  • Kaylee was super fussy today and Elliott was at daycare, so I wasn’t able to get around to cleaning the walls until after dinner.

They really weren’t as bad as I thought they’d be, but I cleaned them anyway!

The worst walls were in Elliott’s room (he presses his feet against the wall when he’s in bed). They were so disgusting! My rag was pretty much black when I was done cleaning those walls.

Elliott really loves helping me clean, so I gave him his own rag to clean the walls.
3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #4 Update

He loved it so much that he wiped them (and the coffee table) for over an hour!

3 Weeks to a Spring Clean Home: Task #4 Update

It’s amazing how many little finger prints I found on the walls around the house. I’m glad they’re all gone… for now!
