  • My 2013 Goals – February Update

    2013 Goals

At the beginning of January, I shared my goals for 2013 and promised you all a monthly update so you could check in on the progress I’m making.

    Personal Goals

    1. Read at least 2 books each month. Done! I read Suddenly Frugal and The Procrastination Equation (really needed to read this one, I am terrible with procrastination).
    2. Organize 1 room in the house each month. Done! We organized (somewhat) the garage and the cold room. We also came up with a plan for organizing the office closet.
    3. Go through all personal and family photos and print photo books.
    4. Plan my days the night before. I failed this one big time.
    5. Exercise at least 3 days each week. I managed one day per week… sometimes. Cold weather makes me lazy.
    6. Create at least 2 DIY projects each month. I bought the ingredients for a few projects I want to try, but I didn’t get around to doing them yet. I was sick twice this month, for extended periods of time, so I spent a lot of time in bed.
    7. Focus on implementing 1 good habit per month. I did this! My good habit for February was to drink 8 glasses of water each day. Right now I’m at about 7.

    Family Goals

    1. Go on 2 mini vacations.
    2. Go camping at least once.
    3. Go up north at least twice.
    4. Go on an evening walk each night we are at home. My multiple sicknesses made this very hard to accomplish. I don’t think we went for more than 2 or 3 evening walks.

    Marriage Goals

    1. Go on 1 vacation for at least 5 days.
    2. Have at least 1 date night each month. We went out to dinner (using a gift card from Christmas!) while my mother-in-law watched the kids.

    Financial Goals

    1. Create and stick to a yearly expenses budget for 2013. We created it and have stuck to it so far.
    2. Create and stick to a home updates budget for 2013.
    3. Fully fund both tax-free savings accounts.
    4. Put at least $15,000 extra toward our mortgage.

Did you set goals for 2013? Please share your progress with me!

This has helped us to stay on track with our goals thank you for posting here is what we accomplished this month.
      February:

      1. Read: Operation Red Jericho by: Joshua Mowll
POTC: Legends of the Brethren Court #1
      3. Been eating much better the last 2 weeks of Feb. Hopefully I am getting on track with this
      5. Drinking less coffee in the morning and getting through most of the water per day.
      6. Pinterest: Made Crock pot spare ribs, slow cooker salsa chicken, tortilla taco bowls, Slow cooker pork ribs (liked this one better then the spare ribs one)and Baked spaghetti squash. (that’s five whoohoo only needed 4)

Deep Cleaned the whole Master bedroom (working on the movies but the PVR has been chalked full since we went on vacation so I am trying to catch up on that first)

Had a no electronics day on Feb. 10th and family day we took the kids to a movie (The hobbit) shopping at Walmart and then we played games in the evening.
Had a second no electronics day on Feb. 27th (because we missed the one in January)

Date night with hubby was Feb 24th (kids were at a sleepover party) we tried to go out to the Keg to spend our gift card but they were both packed 1 hour wait. So we stopped for Sushi, came home and ate it while watching the movie Women in Black. It was awesome.

Happily stuck hard core to the budget this month and with our goal to quit smoking we have put $175 away for future vacations or our new bedroom set, and paid another extra $150 down on the credit cards.(we havn’t quit smoking yet, but we have cut back) Also talked to our financial advisor and we took a bunch of money out of our TFSA and started to work on an RRSP for hubby for the tax reduction so we should get a decent tax return which we will put the money back into the TFSA, pay down some more of our credit and put another chunk away for the new bedroom set we decided we want to save up for before the end of this year.

We are working room to room on spring cleaning and we are writing down things we need to fix as we go but we will be working on the list more in March.
Have all my receipts for my savings for the past two months organized by date and I will be entering them into a spreadsheet in March.

      Financial:
      1. pay extra to Credit cards, have the paid off in 3 years. We did great with 2 out of 3 cards, and the 3rd one with had an issue with the card company, so the payment went into our savings account to be paid when the problem gets solved.
      2. Pay an extra payment each month: This wasn’t done this month. :(
      3. Create and stick to budget: WE DID IT!! for the first time in 7 years we broke even well under budget by 5 cents!!

      1. I was given a gym membership, make it there 3 times a weeks: I made it there 11 out of 12, I’m happy with that!
      2. Read 2 books a month, 1 for fun and 1 to learn something: I read ‘Eat that Frog’, and cant believe I waited so long to read it. I also read ‘Money Rules’ by Gail Vaz-Oxlade, and finally finish ‘The Casual Vacancy’ By J.K. Rowling (wasn’t to bad of a book, but hard to get through.
      3. Create and Follow Monthly meal plan: Well it got created!!
      4. Follow my weekly docket: Everything needed to do got done!
      5. Do 1 DIY project a month: I created storage bins for the desk in my office! it’s now a lot neater!
      6. Pay it Forward, I have chosen 5 people at random to do something nice for: This will take place in February, March, June, July, and October. I have sent out February’s and March’s is packaged and ready to go.
      7. Actually do monthly goal check-in: Check!!

      3. Monthly date night, 1 month stay home date, next go out: February we went to out for a coffee on Valentine’s Day, we talked again about where we need our money to start going, then played some video games, we decided that since we had an event we have to go to in March that we would stay in for February (we had a $4 date)

    5. Emma says:

I’m just curious why you fund your tax free savings account instead of putting it towards your mortgage? How did you decide?

      • Cassie Howard says:

This is just part of our other savings goals, such as vacations, so we like to have it accessible when needed.
